With 18 teams on three courts including 12 high school teams, 3 post grad teams and 3 showcase teams, there was plenty of talent across the board and tons of coaches tuned in and in person there to recruit the talent.
Here’s a look at part one of the many 2022 standouts at session one. There will be two more sessions as well on October 10 and October 24 at U-Turn.
If you’re interested in watching the replays, you can see the entire event on the CBG Live Network.
Tyler Nickel Tyler Nickel 6'8" | SF East Rockingham | 2022 State #85 Nation VA | 6’7” WF | CBG Elite 2 (East Rockingham)
The UNC commit came in ready to play and didn’t disappoint as he got off to a fast start in the first game which pitted the two CBG Elite teams together, and he played with good energy and showed his scoring prowess going for 18 points in an efficient effort. The 6’7” wing showed his competitive edge as he went right at guys and got after it, scoring at multiple levels and making tough shots throughout the event.
George Beal George Beal 6'4" | SF Kings Fork | 2022 State VA | 6’4” WF | King’s Fork
Beal has it looking like LIU Brooklyn got an absolute steal as he continues to show improvement every time I see him and did a little bit of everything on both ends of the floor. He played on the ball more than I’ve ever seen, and he showed very good vision and playmaking ability, he shot it well from multiple levels and created for himself and others and he brought it on the defensive end as well.
Anthony Davis Anthony Davis 6'5" | SF Miller School | 2022 State VA | 6’4” WF | Miller School
Davis got off to a slow start in his first game but by the time their second game against King’s Fork came around, which was a physical slugfest that played right into his hands, he was fantastic setting the tone with his physical and athletic play and going for 22 points in their win. At 6’4” he has a very strong body and uses it on both ends of the floor, he finished well through traffic and above the rim, was fantastic in their press and played hard the entire time he was on the floor.
Greg Williams Greg Williams 6'4" | SF VA Academy | 2022 State VA | 6’4” WG | VA Academy
Williams led a VA Academy team to a 2-0 day with wings over a couple of very good teams in Peninsula Catholic and King’s Fork, and Williams brought the energy on both ends of the floor. He shot the ball extremely well from deep and showed he can get hot quickly and take over that way, he brought it on the defensive end and he showed good leadership throughout the day too.
Tazir Smith Tazir Smith 6'3" | SF Virginia Academy | 2022 State VA | 6’3” CG | VA Academy
Smith was another VA Academy player that played to his strengths, using his athleticism and playmaking ability in the open floor to make some flashy plays and pressuring the basketball the entire day. At 6’3” he has good size for a playmaking guard, he’s capable of playing well above the rim and did so with some big throw downs and he plays like he’s shot out of a cannon at all times.
Lorenzo Nichols Lorenzo Nichols 5'9" | PG Virginia Academy | 2022 State VA | 5’9” PG | VA Academy
Nichols may not have the size or athleticism the other two do, but he was fantastic running the show and making things happen on the basketball with his craftiness and shot making ability. The 5’9” guard changes speeds and directions well, he’s able to get in the lane where he can score it with the floater and different scoop shots and he can really drill it from deep both off the catch and off the bounce.
DJ Campbell | 6’1” PG | Kecoughtan
Campbell is a CBG legend after his play last year during the CBG Winter Series, and he continued that good play in the events with his 20 point performance in an overtime win over Varina in their second game. The 6’1” lead guard has a very strong body and is able to play through contact, he can score it off the bounce in the midrange extremely well and he’s able to get in the lane and make plays for others at will.
Kenny Page | 5’10” PG | Kecoughtan
Page was fantastic for Kecoughtan and will be the x-factor in how successful they’ll be this season, as the 5’10” lead guard is just a playmaker in every aspect of the word. Page is lightning quick off the bounce and changes directions with quick twitch, he’s explosive and has great hang time to go along with his long arms to finish in traffic and his speed and quickness allows him to make plays on both sides of the basketball.
