Class 4A’s Dynamic Duos
In this article:
2022 Trey Campbell Trey Campbell 6'4" | PG Cedar Falls | 2022 State IA & 2023 Dallas Bear Dallas Bear 6'8" | SF Cedar Falls | 2023 State #276 Nation IA (Cedar Falls)
Campbell is one of the state’s best lead guards, a lightning-quick 6-4 point guard with excellent length and the ability to create chaos on both ends of the floor. He has dramatically improved his shooting over the last few years, turning into a very reliable perimeter threat, and when that is paired with his quickness, athleticism, and ball-handling, he becomes very difficult to defend. Pairing Campbell with a lengthy shooting threat like Bear makes the Tigers a very dangerous team again this season, despite losing a ton of production and talent to graduation. Bear, a 6-7/6-8 wing, held a Bryant offer before playing in his first varsity game and buried over 40% of his 3-point attempts off the bench last season. He should get plenty of open looks playing alongside the talented Campbell.
2022 Tamin Lipsey Tamin Lipsey 6'2" | PG Ames | 2022 State #163 Nation IA & 2022 Corey Phillips Corey Phillips 6'5" | PF Ames | 2022 State IA (Ames)
Lipsey, an Iowa State commit, is one of the top two players in the state and will be leading the Little Cyclones, who open the season ranked #1 in our preseason top 10. A quick and physical lead guard, he averaged 16.3 points, 5.0 assists, and 1.8 steals a game last season, showing his ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor. He’s a dynamic playmaking threat, a three-level scorer, and one of the best on-ball defenders in the state. Phillips is a big man with nimble feet who defends well in the pick-and-roll and can stretch the floor, knocking down 45% of his 3-point attempts last season. The Lipsey-Phillips pick-and-roll attack should be one of the elite attacks in the state and is a big reason why Ames is our pick to win the title in 4A.
2022 Peter Moe Peter Moe 6'9" | PF Iowa City West | 2022 State IA & 2024 Kareem Earl Kareem Earl 6'5" | SF Iowa City West | 2024 State IA (Iowa City West)
Moe, a 6-8 scoring combo forward, burst onto the Iowa high school basketball scene in his first game last year, going off for 41 points and 12 rebounds against City High. The Indianapolis move-in went on to average 21.9 points and 8.5 rebounds a game with impressive 54-39-81 shooting splits. With his size and ability to score from anywhere on the floor, he’s a nearly impossible matchup at this level. He’s the son of former Hawkeye Jeff Moe. Earl, another son of a former Hawkeye (Acie Earl), is coming off a solid freshman season in which he averaged 7.3 points and shot nearly 37% from the arc. An athletic wing with good size, he put together a strong summer with the Iowa Barnstormers and is improving his ability to create his own shot. Moe and Earl will combine to give the Trojans one of the best one-two scoring punches in the state.
2022 Josh Dix Josh Dix 6'5" | SG Council Bluffs Lincoln | 2022 State #149 Nation IA & 2022 Jamison Gruber Jamison Gruber 6'1" | PG Council Bluffs Lincoln | 2022 State IA (Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln)
Dix is up there with Lipsey in the “best player in the state” argument. The Iowa commit is a 6-5 wing who impacts the game in a major way on both ends of the floor with his length and talent. He averaged 19.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 3.8 “stocks” (steals + blocks) last season for the Lynx, showing his stat-sheet stuffing ability, while posting 55-38-73 shooting splits. Gruber, his sidekick on the perimeter, averaged 11.9 points and improved his shooting, knocking down 37.7% of his 3-point attempts last season, while also dishing out 4.3 assists a game. He had a very good summer on the grassroots circuit and with the Lynx during high school camps in June, and will pair with Dix to give CBAL arguably the best backcourt in the state.
2022 Eli Raridon Eli Raridon 6'7" | PF Valley | 2022 State IA & 2022 Ruot Bijiek Ruot Bijiek 6'8" | PF Valley | 2022 State IA (Valley)
We’re still not sure if Raridon is going to play basketball this winter (he has signed to play football at Notre Dame), but if he does, the Tigers will have undoubtedly the best frontcourt in the state. Raridon is an athletic freak at 6-6/6-7; a big, physical forward who can score inside and out, control the glass, and make an impact defensively with his athleticism and versatility. He averaged 17.6 points and 6.6 rebounds last season while shooting 61.3% from the floor and 50% from 3. Bijiek is a bouncy and long 6-8 combo forward who stretches the floor and protects the rim, a modern big man who is working to improve his ball-handling, allowing him to transition out to the perimeter more at the next level. He averaged 12.8 points and 6.5 rebounds with 1.6 blocks last season. With the athleticism and skill-sets that Raridon and Bijiek possess, the Tigers are going to be a dangerous team in 4A.
2023 Drew Kingery Drew Kingery 6'4" | SF Indianola | 2023 State IA & 2023 Charlie Willmott Charlie Willmott 6'4" | PF Indianola | 2023 State IA (Indianola)
There are a number of players that you could put with Kingery to form a dynamic duo for Indianola, but we went with Willmott, who had an incredibly productive summer, showing his ability to score from all three levels and dominate the glass on both ends of the floor. He has great footwork and good touch from the arc, and should really improve upon his 5.0 points and 2.3 rebounds a game as a sophomore. Kingery is one of the most talented scoring wings in the state. He holds an offer from North Dakota, and at 6-5/6-6 with length, he is a tough matchup on both ends. He has improved as a playmaker and shot creator, and he uses his length really well on the defensive end. Indianola might lead 4A in scoring, and these two are a big reason why.
2023 Chase Henderson Chase Henderson 6'0" | PG Hoover | 2023 State IA & 2023 Elijah Vos Elijah Vos 6'4" | SF Hoover | 2023 State IA (Hoover)
If you’re looking for a potential darkhorse duo to lead the state in scoring, look no further than this pair of 2023s from the Huskies. They combined to average 30.3 points a game last season, and leading scorer Manny Austin Manny Austin 6'3" | SG Des Moines Hoover | 2021 State IA (18.4) graduated, which opens up a lot of shots. Henderson (17.4) is a slashing guard who uses his quickness to get to the rim routinely, and he can limitless range. If he can improve his efficiency (32.5% from 3 last season), he could have a massive scoring year. Vos posted 51-48-77 shooting splits last year as the tertiary option. A 6-5 wing with a smooth offensive game, he can fill it up from all three levels, and he should have ample opportunities this year.
2023 Keavian Hayes Keavian Hayes 6'2" | SG Sioux City West | 2023 State IA & 2022 Keeon Hutton Keeon Hutton 6'3" | SG Sioux City West | 2022 KS (Sioux City West)
A pair of stat-sheeting stuffing, athletic guards, Hayes and Hutton combined to average 34.1 points a game last season to go with 11.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 3.3 steals a night. Hayes is a compact, physical guard who gets to the rim and finishes through contact, while Hutton has a little more size and length, and is a bit more of a playmaker and distributor. Playing in an up-tempo system with the Wolverines that best utilizes their skill-sets, Hayes and Hutton could easily combine to put up over 40 points a night this year.
2022 Steven Kramer Steven Kramer 6'5" | SG Johnston | 2022 State IA & 2022 Trey Lewis Trey Lewis 5'10" | PG Johnston | 2022 State IA (Johnston)
Kramer, a recent South Dakota commit, is an athletic wing who put together a sensational week at the state tournament last year, helping lead the Dragons to a runner-up finish. A 6-5 wing with good length, he can defend multiple positions, and is a terror in the open court. He has improved his jumper as well, and pairs well with Lewis, who is a fantastic shooter with NBA range and slick ball-handling talents.
2022 Jake Walter Jake Walter 5'10" | CG Prairie | 2022 State IA & 2022 Elijah Ward Elijah Ward 6'2" | CG Prairie | 2022 State IA (Prairie)
This duo combined to average 28.9 points a game last season, and will lead what should be a much-improved Hawks team this season. Walter shot 37.7% from the arc, but both of these talented guards are much better when they’re playing downhill and getting to the bucket. They put pressure on the defense with their constant attacking and quickness.
