Prep Hoops Hustle Region Finals: Top Shooters
Taye Hollins, 6-4 2023 G, Sac Hoyas
The wiry wing was automatic when he got his feet set, but what impressed me the most was his movement without the ball. Hollins is a willing and effective screener away from the ball, making contact with the defender rather than avoiding it, and sprinting hard off of the screens to open spots. He also doesn’t waste dribbles and moves the ball with crisp passing in the half court.
JP Musselmann JP Musselmann 6'6" | PF Brophy Prep | 2022 State AZ , 6-6 2022 F, Arizona Dream
You could essentially have “Arizona Dream” in this category, as seemingly everyone on the team could shoot from deep, but the inside-out presence of Musselmann stood out. A long, rangy forward who did most of his damage rolling off of ball screens and finishing around the basket, he also did a good job sprinting hard off of down screens to the wing, where he quickly squared his body to the basket. His release, while having a slight hitch, was quick enough to get his shot off vs hard closeouts.
Trent Murray Trent Murray 6'1" | SG Desert Vista | 2022 State AZ , 6-1 2022 G, Arizona Dream
Another Arizona Dream member with great footwork, a quick release and supreme confidence. Murray got on a heater in the game against AZ Select, in which he hit a three on four straight possessions, and told his defender he was going to hit a fifth. While he missed, it underscores the confidence that Murray has in his ability to knock down shots from well beyond the college three, even with his defender on his hip.
Miguel Yniguez Miguel Yniguez 6'6" | SG Canyon Crest Academy | 2022 CA-S , 6-6 2022 W, Coastal Elite 17u Elite
A long, smooth wing with an even smoother release, Yniguez quickly gets square to the basket and knocks down shots from the wings and baseline, as well as knocking down jumpers from the midpost. In the opening game against Splash City, he hit 3 threes in rapid succession off the right wing to help his team pull away for the victory.
Evan Record, 5-9 2022 G, Coastal Elite
The diminutive Record has established himself as one of the top shooters in San Diego, and this weekend did nothing to take away from that. He can knock down shots off the catch, operating off of ball screens. But his forte is knocking down deep threes when his feet are set in the half court.
Kyle Neff, 6-4 2023 W, Coastal Elite 16u Elite
I’ve talked a lot about his teammate Trey Vergenz the past couple of weeks, but Neff, fresh off of an ankle injury, was Vergenz’ rival for top shooter on his team. A longer, lankier shooter, Neff can shoot off the catch or in rhythm off of a one-dribble pull-up from three.
