I mostly watched the 15U teams and saw some really solid up and coming players. A solid big man is something every team needs and here’s a quick look at some of the top interior players and forwards I saw from this weekend.
1. Aerimiah Binford – PAL Elite 2024
Binford stood out to me the most due to his defensive ability. He’s long and mobile and can cover a lot of ground defensively. He’s very active around the rim, contesting drives and blocking shots. Does a good job staying down on fakes. Uses his long arms and quick hands to get deflections. He’s a good rebounder and uses two hands to rebound. Offensively, he has some skill in the post that should get refined as he gets older/experienced. Can finish at the rim.
2. AJ Fournier – Coastal Elite 2024 Premier
Fournier is a bit of a forward who plays more of a big man role with the age group he’s playing with. What stood out to me about him was his ability to move off ball. He makes good cuts to the rim and he has good hands catching teammates passes. Finishes well in the paint. He’s mobile in the paint, he hunts for rebounds. As a forward, he has some wing skills as well. He’s able to handle the ball in transition at times.
3. Lucas Gregg – AZ Triple Threat 2024
Gregg was another big who stood out because of his defensive play. He’s an interior anchor. He does a very good job of staying down on fakes, even if he has to leave the paint and contest a big who can shoot. The times I did see him bite on a fake, he was able to recover well. He works hard on the glass, especially offensive rebounding. Positions himself well in the paint to contest and to grab boards. Just needs to cut down on fouling a little bit but has good upside.
4. JJ Sanchez – South Bay Show 2024
Sanchez was one of, if not the most versatile big man that I saw. Interior wise, he can get good post up position and uses drop steps to get buckets. Finishes strong in the paint. He can power his way through contact and draw fouls to get himself to the free-throw line. Good job lurking in the dunker spot. He can make moves off the dribble and his passing is advanced for a big man/young player. Very unselfish and can find open teammates when passing out the post.
