Not everyone from a midwestern school is an unknown obviously. Jace Linenberger Jace Linenberger 6'7" | C Hays | 2022 State KS from Hays, Britton Dutton Britton Dutton 6'0" | SG Argo Comm | 2023 State KS from Ellinwood, and Seth Madron Seth Madron 6'2" | SG Mcpherson | 2022 State KS from McPherson are all-staters who need no introduction.
Here are a few guards from the midwestern part of the state who are showing what they can do against elite competition (in alphabetical order):
Anders Dewey, 5-foot-10 guard, 2022, Plainville, Western Kansas Elite:
Dewey impresses with his athleticism and his aggressiveness on the club circuit. A left-hander who can get into the lane and break down a defense, he plays the game at a high rate of speed. He hits from the perimeter, or beats the first defender to drive and dish. Dewey is the kind of multi-sport athlete who will be a fine leader for Plainville next year.
Joel Ford, 6-foot guard, 2022, Phillipsburg, Western Kansas Elite:
Dewey’s multi-sport rival at Phillipsburg is his running mate with WKE. Ford is a solid point guard who is in control handles the ball and leads with intelligence and toughness. He can score from deep and can run the offense from end to end.
Ashton Hernandez, 5-foot-10 guard, 2022, Hays, Western Kansas Elite:
Hernandez doesn’t back down when facing great competition at club events. He plays with all-out intensity and battles. He is fast and athletic, a good ball handler and an attacking defender. Hernandez was a key reserve on a great Hays team last year. He is a gritty guard who can affect a game without scoring a lot of points. Graduation of a couple of guards should open the door for more playing time next year.
Carson Kieffer Carson Kieffer 6'1" | PG Hays | 2022 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2022, Hays, Western Kansas Elite:
It’s no surprise that Kieffer stands out even against top-level showcase competition. He’s a top-flight guard at one of the best programs in the state. Kieffer earned honorable mention 5A as a junior, scoring 10 points and dishing out 6.5 assists a game. Kieffer is a workmanlike ball handler and distributor. He’s not flashy, he just gets the job done. Kieffer’s coaches rave about his intelligence and effectiveness.
Sage Koelsch, 5-foot-11 guard, 2022, Great Bend, Western Kansas Elite:
Another multi-sport star, Koelsch is a slick ball handler and quick driver. He has a nice midrange game off the bounce. He can shoot on the move and from deep. Koelsch is a good athlete who can defend, rebound and run the offense.
Garrett Robertson Garrett Robertson 5'10" | PG Hutchinson | 2023 State KS , 5-foot-10 guard, 2023, Hutchinson, Oz Elite:
Robertson has been showing for a couple of years that he can get it done against the best competition in the land. He plays on a premier club team and knows how to mesh with elite athletes. He has great confidence in his ability and his knowledge of how to run a team. At Hutchinson, Robertson takes on more of a scorer’s role, and he showed as a sophomore he was up to the challenge.
