Preview
Potter County earned a four seed in the Sweet Sixteen but was knocked out by Lower Brule. The Battlers went 19-4 on the year but their Sweet Sixteen lost left a bad taste in their mouth. Good thing they have their top two players back – Grant Luikens Grant Luikens 6'3" | SG Potter County | 2022 State SD and Cooper Logan Cooper Logan 6'0" | SG Potter County | 2022 State SD – as senior wings/forwards plus Skyler Van Well as a junior ready to handle. Throw in four others returning with good experience and you have a top ten level team in state next season.
It was a great end to the Lower Brule season not only beating Potter County 80-72 to make the State Tournament, but also winning a team at state and finishing in the top ten of Class B rankings wise. If that’s not enough, they bring back almost all of their key pieces from a team that made that run including Brian LaRoche Jr Brian LaRoche Jr 6'0" | PG Lower Brule | 2023 State SD , Gavin Thigh, and Keshaume Thigh Keshaume Thigh 6'3" | SG Lower Brule | 2022 State SD .
Ipswich went 15-7 last winter with excellent balance. The problem is three of the five starters graduated and they didn’t get all that much from the bench. Top player and first team all league talent Ty Kadlec Ty Kadlec 5'11" | PG Ipswich | 2022 State SD is returning and that will keep the Tigers a top 3-4 squad.
Herreid/Selby has four of their top six players returning from a 10-12 team. Tray Hattick is a 6’1 junior-to-be ready to become a name that many should know. It’s his team and they should improve to a few games above .500 at least. And remember, those back to back late season wins over Highmore-Harrold should springboard them into this season. The Pirates are ready for revenge though. They have more returning than the others trying to catch the two at the top of the standings.
With their top two players returning, Faulkton will be in the mix of the Region as well. Sully Buttes was 10-12 last year but losing their three best players will be a blow. North Central brings back three of their top four guys from a 4-win team but they relied on Alex Maier for a lot of scoring and he’s graduated. Sunshine Bible Academy didn’t play last season so it’s tough to say much about what they will have and do next year.
