[player_tooltip player_id="855944" first="Edy" last="Essien"] has definitely been around the block. The slender 6-foot, 155-pound combo guard has been playing varsity ball at Century since he was a freshman and now a senior, he’s ready to go out on a big note. Essien worked hard this off-season on his game, working out and playing with Oregon Basketball Club in preparation for this year and beyond.

"I definitely worked on my free throws and getting to the rim and my shot off the bounce," Essien said. "I feel like I could have played better (in AAU) but I played solid and got my teammates involved."

Known best for his ability to catch and shoot with range at a high level, Essien is now more adept at attacking the basket and finishing around the rim. His aim is to play at the next level and local D-III schools such as Pacific and George Fox have been in touch.

"The plan is to play at the highest level that I can play at, if that means playing prep or junior college," Essien said. "I hope to be in more contact with colleges as the season goes here."

So far this year, Essien is averaging 13.5 points and 6.3 rebounds and has provided senior leadership for the Jaguars, helping encourage younger teammates such as [player_tooltip player_id="964537" first="Kyle" last="Hamnes"] and [player_tooltip player_id="861082" first="Axton" last="Wongsomadi"] with their games. Century faces a big test in Pacific League action next week against Sherwood.

"We’ve got a good group of guys here that are unselfish," Essien said. "It feels good that anyone here can make the same shot that I can make. We’ve got to keep focusing on rebounding and X’s and O’s and I think we’ll be straight."

Essien currently ranks as the #31 player in the updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
