<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The point guard has always been lauded as the floor general on all levels of basketball. When it comes to the class of 2023, these point guards fall in that line as well. With the release of the June rankings for the 2023 class, we will take a look at the top ten point guards from that class. These are the preps that command the ship for their respective teams.</p> <p><strong>1.  [player_tooltip player_id="1130920" first="Canin" last="Jefferson"] (6’0" / Isidore Newman / OVR #8)</strong></p> <p>The Newman point guard was nothing but spectacular during the high school season and carried it over into grassroots play.  Jefferson seems to know when to run the offense and when to score.  His ability to play the one has drawn Division I interest as well as helped him move into the top ten of his class.  </p> <p><strong>2.  [player_tooltip player_id="1055169" first="Kam" last="Johnson"] (5’9" / Archbishop Shaw / OVR #10)</strong></p> <p>When you think of a guard who can turn it on and carry a team, this prep is the first one I think of.  Johnson will pass and get others into the game early.  However, when the chips are down, Kam will call his own number to finish the deal.  He is a player no one should bet against.  </p> <p><strong>3.  [player_tooltip player_id="970139" first="Chris" last="Carpenter"] (5’9" / Woodlawn-Shreveport / OVR #15)</strong></p> <p>The Knights point guard makes the game look easy at times.  His lefty jumper is smooth as silk and he is very accurate from deep.  Carpenter also has underrated athleticism that mixes well with his speed and quickness.  When Carpenter gets hot, it will be a long night for the opposition.  </p> <p><strong>4.  [player_tooltip player_id="970132" first="Chilaydrian" last="Newton"] (6’1" / Simsboro / OVR #16)</strong></p> <p>Of the three Simsboro guards, Newton is the one who is more of a traditional point.  He knows how to direct the offense and get the best shot in each set.  Newton is not afraid to attack the rim and he will dunk on the opposition if he gets a chance in transition.  Mix in his ability to shoot from distance and Newton is one hard guard to stop.  </p> <p><strong>5.  [player_tooltip player_id="970121" first="Trevor" last="Daugherty"] (6’1" / JS Clark Leadership / OVR #22)</strong></p> <p>Daugherty can change defense into offense at the blink of an eye the way he plays passing lanes.  He is also very good leading the fast break and will find shooters who run the floor aggressively.  Daugherty can score from the perimeter and in the paint making him very hard to defend.  </p> <p><strong>6.  [player_tooltip player_id="1145567" first="Connor" last="Greavis"] (5’11" / Livonia / OVR #39)</strong></p> <p>The Livonia point has shown a true ability to play the lead guard during grassroots play.  Greavis displays a mature, pass first point guard feel for the game with Showtime 17U.  With the 16U team, he gets to run and gun more.  Playing both styles will definitely have him ready when the new season begins.  </p> <p><strong>7.  [player_tooltip player_id="1130803" first="N’Derius" last="Walker"] (5’11" / East Ascension / OVR #40)</strong></p> <p>The Spartan point guard is one of the more aggressive on-ball defenders that the Boot has.  He is very good at picking ballhandlers in open space and sprinting out for layups.  Walker is also very quick to the rim and creates pressure in that way.  He is definitely a hound on the defensive end.  </p> <p><strong>8.  [player_tooltip player_id="970135" first="LeTavian" last="Crockett"] (6’0" / St. Amant / OVR #42)</strong></p> <p>[player_tooltip player_id="970135" first="LeTavian" last="Crockett"] has had a stellar grassroots season for LA Fire on the Prep Hoops Circuit by being that point guard that penetrates and finishes at the rim.  Crockett pushes the ball in transition or on drives until he is stopped.  His ability to get into the paint and his strength in finishing makes him lethal around the bucket for St. Amant.  </p> <p><strong>9.  [player_tooltip player_id="1213605" first="Cameron" last="Lumar"] (6’0" / Hahnville / OVR #47)</strong></p> <p>Lumar was one of the bright spots during the Hahnville 5A semifinal loss at Marsh Madness.  He was able to make shots from the perimeter and play tough, hard-nosed defense.  That is what Hahnville will need out of him this year with the addition of leadership.  With his ability to score, Lumar will be a point guard to fear in class 5A.  </p> <p><strong>10.  [player_tooltip player_id="1130810" first="Kylan" last="Dugas"] (5’9" / Westgate / OVR #55)</strong></p> <p>The Westgate point guard is small and quick with a very tight handle.  He can blow by guards with all of these traits and has the wherewithal to hit the backline of the defense with a floater or short jumper.  He knows what he is doing with the basketball and is hard to stop once he gets going.  Dugas is a very tough cover.  </p> <p>The point guard position is definitely one of the most important.  This class has a plethora of small guards.  They are so basketball savvy however, they can hurt teams with their various skill sets.  It is definitely not the size of the dog in their cases.  These guards exhibits players with plenty of fight when they are on the basketball court.  </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
