We updated our 2022 rankings and lots of players went up and down in the new rankings. We’re going to be looking at some players who saw their ranking improve and new faces who now have a number next to their name in the rankings. We’ll go position by position, starting with point guards.

[player_tooltip player_id="809621" first="Ajay" last="Sheldon"], 6’0 PG Dublin Coffman 2022 Midwest Basketball Club 3SSB: Sheldon had a great junior season for Dublin Coffman and has continued his impressive play on the grassroots scene for Midwest Basketball Club 3SSB. Sheldon is super skilled and is a competitor on defense despite some size limitations. Sheldon is a modern day point guard, with the ability to pull-up from 25+ feet while still getting his teammates involved. Elon and Furman offered Sheldon in April and that list should grow when Division I coaches get to see the improved Sheldon in July.

[player_tooltip player_id="921758" first="Danny" last="Young Jr"], 6’2 PG Shaker Heights 2022 C2K Elite: Like Sheldon, Young had a monster scoring season for Shaker Heights playing under his father. I was more impressed with Young on the travel scene, showing his ability to play next to other talented players instead of being the primary scorer like he is with his high school team. Young is still a score first guard, with a special knack for getting to the free-throw line, but he has more energy to focus on distributing and defense with C2K. July will be a big month for Young with C2K with college coaches watching in person again.

[player_tooltip player_id="1082243" first="Jonathan" last="Effertz"], 6’0 PG Saint Ignatius 2022 C2K Elite: Effertz is a pure shooter from the point guard position, making shots whenever I watch him. Effertz has shown that he can get shots off against elite competition for C2K this summer. I’d expect Effertz to be one of the most highly coveted point guards by regional Division II programs this summer.

[player_tooltip player_id="921785" first="Derrick" last="James"], 5’10 PG Canal Winchester 2022 Nova-Reese: I’m not sure if any guard improved their stock more over the spring travel ball season more than James. He looks more confident offensively and is doing things with the ball I previously thought he was incapable of doing. It’s remarkable to see the growth that James is showing while playing for Nova. He’s already gotten a pair of offers from Cedarville and Concord, I expect that list to grow.

[player_tooltip player_id="1201819" first="Trey" last="Majidzadeh"], 5’11 PG Olentangy Liberty 2022 Central Ohio AAU: Majidzadeh came out of nowhere and gave All Ohio Black the work at the Nike Super 16 tournament. I then saw him continue his high level play at the Prep Hoops Grit Region Memorial Classic. I didn’t remember Majidzadeh making much of an impact for Olentangy Liberty last season, but with [player_tooltip player_id="918986" first="Henry" last="Hinkle"] graduating, it could be Majidzadeh filling in those shoes at the point guard position.

[player_tooltip player_id="1195102" first="Mason" last="Studer"], 5’11 PG Colonel Crawford 2022 Ohio Buckets Lash: Both Studer and [player_tooltip player_id="1195158" first="Garrett" last="Spaun"] have seen their stocks improve this summer playing for Ohio Buckets Lash. Studer is a tough PG who defends his ass off and doesn’t back down against bigger and more athletic opponents. Studer and [player_tooltip player_id="1195157" first="Carter" last="Valentine"] (who will be featured when his position is discussed) are a great duo for Colonel Crawford to work with next season. Ohio Buckets Lash also had a very impressive Spring, beating more talented teams with their unselfish play. Small colleges will want to watch this team play in July, as they play a great brand of basketball to watch.
