Continue ReadingEvery year Hoop Group puts on one of the best events in the country at the Boo Williams Sportsplex called the Southern Jam Fest, but this year it was a little bit different. Some of the best shoe company and independent programs from up and down the east coast came to Southern, including the number one team in the country Team Final featuring the top two players in the country.
There were double digit shoe company teams from all three major circuits, and plenty of other talented teams making it one of the most talented events I’ve ever been to. We will have tons of content from it, starting with part one of the many 16U standouts, focusing on the VA and SC areas.
Trevor Smith Trevor Smith 5'11" | PG Woodside | 2023 State #267 Nation VA | 5’11” PG | Team Loaded VA
Smith has been playing very well as of late and is looking like one of the top point guards in the state right now. He’s a natural athlete with good quickness and the ability to run the pick-and-roll and make plays for others, but he’s also showing an improvement in his ability to make shots from deep off the catch. He has a good feel for the game and is steadily improving where he needs to, and he should build on his offer list he already has.
Carter Lang Carter Lang 6'9" | C St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State #199 Nation VA | 6’10” C | Team Loaded VA
Lang continues to impress as one of the top big men in VA in the 2023 class, as he’s always super productive and plays with a great motor on both ends. At 6’10” he has good hands and good feet in the post, he provides a big target to catch and finish over the shoulder and he continues to show that he can step out and shoot it from deep as well. He pursues the basketball well and rebounds on both ends of the floor and he takes up space and makes it difficult for driving guards to finish.
John St. Germain John St. Germain 6'2" | PG St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’1” PG | Team Loaded VA
St. Germain is the straw that stirs the drink for this Loaded team, as he’s the undisputed leader and floor general of the group. He’s a very high IQ guy who has good instincts on both ends of the floor and sees the game ahead of everyone else, and he sets the tone on both ends of the floor with his ability to guard the ball the length of the floor. He’s highly skilled as both a scorer and a facilitator and he makes winning plays across the board.
Justin Boggs | 6’1” CG | Boo Williams
Boggs continues to look like one of the more underrated guys in the 2023 class as the St. Andrew’s product brings it every time I’ve seen him this summer. He’s a high motor and high IQ guard that can play on or off the basketball, he can light it up from deep with deep range and he’s a good athlete that can finish above the rim. He brings it against the best and can fill it up in bunches and is a good on ball defender as well.
Samuel Brannen Samuel Brannen 6'0" | CG King’s Fork | 2023 State VA | 5’11” PG | Boo Williams
Brannen is the x-factor for this Boo team as he comes off the bench and provides a big punch at the point guard position for them. He’s highly skilled and cerebral, as he knows where everyone is on the floor and is a threat to score the basketball with the ball in his hands with his craftiness and skill set. He can move off the ball and make shots from deep and he’s always in the right place at the right time on the defensive end too.
Wesley Tubbs | 6’6” WF | Team United
Tubbs is a stock rising wing out of South Carolina who has recently been picking up offers from high and mid major programs, and he has a lot of tools that make it obvious why. He has a great frame and is a natural athlete, he plays above the rim and through contact well and he has a lot of potential on the defensive end to guard multiple positions. He has a budding skill set that should improve with time, and he’ll be a name to remember moving forward.
Brandon White | 6’10” C | Team United
White has recently reclassified to the 2023 class, and he looks like he could be a nationally ranked big moving forward. He’s a big paint presence that is quick off his feet and a very good rim protector, he can finish above the rim in traffic and he’s a physical presence in the paint that rebounds at a high rate in and out of his area. His mobility is very impressive for a prospect his size, and he’s able to impact the game on both ends in the half court and in transition.
