Kansas freshmen faced some tough competition from around the country at the Prep Hoops Live event held at Drive5 Sports Center in Kansas City.

SSA Hoops Elite Black went 2-2 in the tough Pool C. They ran into two bad matchups that resulted in losses. One was to South Dakota Attack that boasted a 6-foot-11 post and a lot of size across the board. The other was to the Alabama Celtics, an ultra-athletic bunch that, by the end of the tournament, was considered one of the best in the field. Despite running into a ton of size, SSA Black was led by bigs Bryce Beisner of Beloit, Abe Hilbert of Nemaha Central and Ian McNabb of Manhattan. Emmett Gaskill of Hugoton and Quevon Purucker of Manhattan had some good moments as well.

KC Spurs Black was 3-1 in Pool E and made a real good impression on the weekend. Jaxon Klein was perhaps the most impressive Kansan 15U at PH Live. He is a high-energy slasher from Blue Valley Northwest who relentlessly attacks the rim and has a lot of versatility. Another standout was guard David Cobin of Desoto, a darting, high-scoring point guard who turns a lot of steals into points.

Guards highlighted Kansas 94x50 Elite effort. Jalen Freeman of Seaman and [player_tooltip player_id="1212976" first="Chase" last="Thompson"] of Topeka West showed off their skills from the perimeter. The team doesn’t have much size, but it plays up-tempo and puts the ball up from deep.

Other good performances were turned in by:

Mason English, Victory Ministry, Pittsburg:

English is a big player who defies a position. He showed he can score, hitting from the perimeter. But he is a big-bodied 6-foot-2 player who handles the ball and passes over the top of the press.

Amarian Womack, KC Runnin’ Rebels, KC-Washington:

Womack turned in his usual high-octane effort for a team otherwise populated by Missourians. He never stops pushing and can create his own shots.

Josiah Polynice, KC Spurs Silver, Olathe South:

Polynice is a deft ball handler who uses his quickness to beat defenders up the floor, penetrate and find open shooters. He also excels at on-ball defense.

JJ Maddox, Between The Lines DS@6 Elite, Shawnee Mission West:

Maddox is an elite athlete who takes it to opposing ball handlers. He goes 0 to 60 in a flash and can really penetrate. He created his own shots and passed to teammates moving at top speed.

Shaun Cannady, Cauley-Stein Elite, KC-Washington:

Cannady is a very athletic post/wing who can really crash the boards. He jumps with the best of them and at 6-foot-3 is slippery and agile to maneuver through the lane. Cauley-Stein faced some really tough completion, but Cannady and his teammates never stopped fighting.
