There is a really nice group of sophomore guards at the 2A and 3A levels that bear watching this summer as they use the club season to grown their games.
Guys like Keller Hurla Keller Hurla 6'0" | CG St. Marys | 2023 State KS and Brekyn Ratzlaff Brekyn Ratzlaff 6'0" | PG Hillsboro | 2023 State KS (pictured) need no introduction. They are a couple of the top guards in the state at all levels and have already proven themselves on the club circuit.
But there are a lot of other sophomore guards in 2A and 3A worth checking out this spring:
Wesley Fair Wesley Fair 6'2" | CG Wichita Collegiate | 2023 KS , Wichita Collegiate:
Collegiate loses several good players, so Fair will have the opportunity to step up in a big way next year. A good summer campaign can prepare him for a bigger role. The 6-foot-2 guard can rebound and defend as well as excel at the offensive end. He averaged 12.1 points and 5.2 rebounds.
Mario Menghini, Frontenac:
Menghini is a multi-sport athlete who brings a lot of athleticism to the court. He knows how to compete, and plays with a football-type of toughness. Frontenac has a chance to be really good next year with Menghini and big man Jordan Fudge coming back after a developmental off-season.
Britton Dutton Britton Dutton 6'0" | SG Argo Comm | 2023 State KS , Ellinwood:
The Eagle’s Dutton is an elite scorer at the 2A level. Guys like him relish the summer, where they can test themselves against players from all classes. Dutton scores at all levels, shooting a nice percentage and drawing a lot of fouls. On the summer circuit, where nearly everyone can score, the 6-foot guard can show off his passing skills, which produced 4.8 assists per contest.
Cade Burdette, Southeast-Cherokee:
The 5-foot-10 guard is an athletic multi-sport guy. He gets after it at both ends, but he really excels behind the arc. If defenses give him room, he’ll bury five or six 3-pointers a game, as he demonstrated a couple of times last season. The 2A guard can show off his range on the circuit this spring.
Dale Gillespie, Pleasanton:
Gillespie is a 5-foot-10 guard with a sweet stroke who can’t be left alone for an instant, even from well beyond the arc. He has nice athleticism and can get to the goal, to finish or to dish to a teammate. He plays an active, ball-hawking style on defense. It will be fun to see him matched up with players from all levels.
Landon Kaufman Landon Kaufman 5'11" | PG Moundridge Highschool | 2023 State KS , Moundridge:
Kaufman has been a guy worth watching for a couple of years now. He poured in 20.4 points per game as a sophomore, while also ringing up a bunch of assists. The 5-foot-11 guard is dangerous from deep, but he also puts it on the floor and draws a lot of fouls. He’s money at the line.
