This high school season was unique to say the least. Covid brought an entirely new list of challenges to players, coaches, and programs. The young athletes in our state battled through it and played some amazing basketball. Today, we will honor a Prep Girls Hoops class of 2023 Player of the Year and Honorable Mentions.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

[player_tooltip player_id="986247" first="Amari" last="Allen"] (PG, Hamtramck)

The double-double machine established himself as an elite point guard in the state of Michigan.

[player_tooltip player_id="985664" first="Anthony" last="Benard"] (CG, Grosse Pointe South)

Benard is a tough finisher and a leader beyond his years.

[player_tooltip player_id="987274" first="Jordan" last="Briggs"] (PG, Muskegon)

A shifty lead guard, Briggs is a dynamic scorer and distributor.

[player_tooltip player_id="987270" first="Kaden" last="Brown"] (PG, Grand Rapids Catholic Central)

Brown was a floor leader for a state champion Grand Rapids Catholic Central team.

[player_tooltip player_id="986243" first="Owen" last="Colpaert"] (SG, Macomb Dakota)

Colpaert is an athletic scorer that can get buckets when needed.

[player_tooltip player_id="985660" first="Braelon" last="Green"] (SG, Ypsilanti Lincoln)

Green is athletic, strong, and aggressive. His numbers exploded this year as he became his teams top go-to guy.

[player_tooltip player_id="986244" first="Tyler" last="Jamison"] (SF, Port Huron Northern)

There’s no doubt that Jamison is an elite wing in the class of 2023.

[player_tooltip player_id="1077676" first="Simon" last="Neuhaus"] (SF, East Grand Rapids)

Neuhaus is a smooth multi level scorer with all the next level intangibles.

[player_tooltip player_id="986245" first="Triston" last="Nichols"] (SF, Warren De La Salle)

Nichols is a physically strong wing that can guard multiple positions.

[player_tooltip player_id="902884" first="Jakhary" last="Towns"] (SG, Godwin Heights)

Towns took a big step this season. He has one of the best mid range games in Michigan.

[player_tooltip player_id="985661" first="Curtis" last="Williams"] (SF, Brother Rice)

Williams is a big time talent on the wing. He should have a laundry list of D1 offers at the end of it all.

[player_tooltip player_id="985657" first="Sonny" last="Wilson"] (PG, UD-Jesuit)

Wilson had a season of proof. He proved that he’s a top notch point guard talent in the state and well beyond.

CO-PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

[player_tooltip player_id="985658" first="RJ" last="Taylor"] (PG, Grand Blanc)

I just couldn’t leave [player_tooltip player_id="985658" first="RJ" last="Taylor"] off the Player of the Year award. The young man has a game and a temperament that is mature as can be. He’s not the flashy type of player that will produce eye popping video, but he just gets the job done. Taylor is simply a winner through and through. He’s the type of player that naturally brings success for his teammates and himself. He’s one of the most consistently accurate passers in the midwest. It seems like Taylor always knows where his teammates will be at any given moment. When you’re this type of player, and you win your school’s first ever state championship, you deserve the Player of the Year recognition.

[player_tooltip player_id="985659" first="Malik" last="Olafioye"] (PG, Ecorse)

We mentioned eye popping video with [player_tooltip player_id="985658" first="RJ" last="Taylor"]. Well, if you want eye popping video, [player_tooltip player_id="985659" first="Malik" last="Olafioye"] might be your guy. He’s flat out amazing with the ball in his hands. He can pull a defender one way and explode the other before the defense even knows it. If you need an isolation bucket, Olafioye can get it. He can score from all 3 levels as well. But that’s not his entire game. He’s a prolific distributor as well. Olafioye can hit the smallest of spots with a pass in traffic. He can even be seen hitting a spot and passing his teammates open. Olafioye is pushing the top 50 in the country in the class of 2023 and in my opinion, is already there. With this type of skill and dominance, [player_tooltip player_id="985659" first="Malik" last="Olafioye"] is a great choice for Player of the Year.
