BELLFLOWER, Ca—It was the first day in a high school gym in well over a year to witness a showdown of two to the top programs in Sourthern California in St. John Bosco and Windward. The Braves of St John Bosco would eventually wear down Windward in a hard-played game 58-41. Here are the players that stoodout for each team.

Unsung hero

[player_tooltip player_id="970262" first="Marco" last="Kenz"] (St. John Bosco)

2021, WF/PF, 6-foot-6, 180 pounds

Joel’s Take: Kenz has a solid looking frame with long arms, ideal shoulder width, and he’s a solid athlete. He has a good feel for the game as demonstrated by his passing in the half court and he showed a nice shooting touch out to 20-feet. He gets good lift on his shot and his wrist action is ideal. In addition, he appeared to be engaged with his head on a swivel at both ends of the floor.

Sharpshooter

Jake Shapiro (Wndward)

2021, SG, 6-foot, 155 pounds

Joel’s take: The best shooter in this game was definitely Shapiro. He sets up his shot well and his mechanics are tight. He comes off of pindown screens or along the baseline and he gets off his shot fairly quick. He didn’t show the ability to shoot off the dribble, but he is quite potent off the catch.

Mr. Intrigue

Christian Estrada (St. John Bosco)

2022, PF, 6-foot-7, 215 pounds

Joel’s Take: Estrada is a chiseled 4-man with very broad shoulders and long arms. The lefty showed the ability to score over his right shoulder. Although he is a bit mechanical, he is a physical rebounder who has solid hands and timing. In transition he runs in transition and can finish through contact.

On the Rise

DJ Henry (St. John Bosco)

2022, PG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds

Joel’s Take: The Braves will be losing [player_tooltip player_id="747084" first="Scotty" last="Washington"], [player_tooltip player_id="747085" first="Lamaj" last="Lewis"], and Hunter Richardson so it was nice to see an intriguing guard like Henry enter the game. He is quick guard with a wiry frame that should fill out nicely. He showed a good burst to get by his defender and he a slashing ability to get to the rim. He slides his feet well on defense and has active hands. In addition, he displayed ideal vision and deliiverd the ball where it needed to go on the break as well as in the half court.
