In 1959 the Wayzata Trojans won a state title.  And just like that it’s 2021 and the Trojans are hoisting another trophy!  Who led the way? Prep Hoops breaks it down!

MVP.  Drew Berkland Drew Berkland 5'11" | PG Wayzata | 2022 State MN / Camden Heide Camden Heide Camden Heide 6'7" | SF Wasatch Academy | 2022 State #129 Nation UT /Defenders. It was too hard to pick, and I will get to the defense below.  Drew Berkland Drew Berkland 5'11" | PG Wayzata | 2022 State MN stepped up and hit big shot after big shot.  Five threes and 19 points.  I feel like every game I watch that is a reasonably big game, Drew plays a big role and he certainly did tonight.  Heide was equally as important with his double-double of ten boards and 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting.  That behind the back attack into a finger roll is something fans will remember.  Berkland a future Gopher baseball player, Heide a nationally ranked 4-star wing, both are future studs and current state champions.

Top Prospect to Know. Tre Holloman Tre Holloman Tre Holloman 6'2" | PG Cretin-Derham Hall | 2022 State #57 Nation MN .  I am going to share exactly what I said in my tweet because it captures my thoughts perfectly: The CDH point guard was the only starter back from last year’s team, one of two players back from the top ten. The junior took a big step forward as a shooter and led his team to the state championship game. A testament to the competitor Tre is.

I think that says it all but also know that Tre scored 20 points with seven assists and five boards on 5 of 10 shooting, 9 of 9 shooting from the foul line.  Last summer I recall a game where Tre was having some trouble at the foul line as well as with the jumper and he was shaking his head.  It sticks out because he was really angry with himself.  After watching CDH play several times this year you can surely tell that this competitor has put a ton of work in when it comes to his touch.  Tre hit a couple more jumpers today, made all his foul shots.

Surprise Performer. Marselio Mendez, Jack Tauer Jack Tauer Jack Tauer 6'2" | SG Cretin-Derham Hall | 2021 State MN , and Jack Plum.  I want to point out again, while Tre is special, this senior group really stepped up as well.  Wayzata was the better team but there were more examples of why CDH is where they are.  Mendez hitting three more threes and scoring 14 points in a state title game. Tauer hitting two more threes and at one point getting to 40 percent on the season as a three point shooter.  Jack Plum exploding after 13 rebounds and scoring four times.

Defensive Player of the Game. The Wayzata Guards.  It wasn’t a surprise, we talked about it in the preview yesterday, but Bryan Schnettler sent different guards at Tre Holloman Tre Holloman Tre Holloman 6'2" | PG Cretin-Derham Hall | 2022 State #57 Nation MN all game and made him work for everything he got.  Trey Lance came off the bench and played some of the best defense on the ball you will ever see.  Eddie Beeninga Eddie Beeninga Eddie Beeninga 6'1" | PG Wayzata | 2021 State MN and Kody Williams Kody Williams 6'0" | PG Wayzata | 2021 State MN took their turns chasing and pressuring Holloman.  It was a fresh player going at Holloman all game and they forced six turnovers out of him.  It’s what needed to be done and the Trojans did a great job with it.  Kody also scored 11 points with seven assists and five boards playing an excellent all around game.  Eddie Beeninga Eddie Beeninga Eddie Beeninga 6'1" | PG Wayzata | 2021 State MN couldn’t be stopped on the attacking scoring 16 points.

Wayzata returns….  I’m sorry to say that high school basketball fans but Wayzata brings back a lot.  Those three guards were just mentioned (Lance, Beeninga, Williams will be gone) but you saw the potential replacements this year in Hayden Tibbits and Spencer Hall as they came off the bench most of the season.  Plus Berkland and Ryan Harvey Ryan Harvey Ryan Harvey 6'3" | SG Wayzata | 2022 State MN are back in the backcourt.  Add in Carter Bjerke Carter Bjerke Carter Bjerke 6'9" | C Wayzata | 2022 State MN (7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists tonight) and Camden Heide Camden Heide Camden Heide 6'7" | SF Wasatch Academy | 2022 State #129 Nation UT and you have the preseason number one.

CDH returns.... Tre Holloman Tre Holloman Tre Holloman 6'2" | PG Cretin-Derham Hall | 2022 State #57 Nation MN will be looking at a similar situation, new faces.  The next guys eight that played tonight (before the final minute) were seniors.  There are some players coming up and you will recognize their last names - David Oturu, Charlie Plum Charlie Plum 6'5" | PF Cretin-Derham Hall | 2022 State MN , Adam Tauer - but it’s going to be Tre and a bunch of new guys again next season.
