While their class will continue to expand and evolve, there are some players new to the rankings that are definitely players to watch going forward. In this article I will take a look at ten such sophomores.
#6 | Brandon Hardy Brandon Hardy 6'4" | SG Zachary | 2023 State #234 Nation LA | 6’4″ G | Zachary
The Zachary sophomore broke out on the scene with performance in a loss to St. Augustine and has been entrenched ever since. Rodgers is ultra quick chaning ends with the ball in his hands. He can go coast-to-coast on the hardwood and finish on, around, or through defenders. Rodgers is not bad from deep either. His debut in the top 10 is no fluke and he will be one of the state’s best by his time is done.
#13 | Cole White Cole White 6'6" | SF Holy Cross | 2023 FL | 6’6″ F | Holy Cross
White is a player that has only scratched the surface of his talent to me. He is a 6’6″ forward that Holy Cross does not run plays for and he still effects the game’s outcome. White is alread an above average rebounder who is very active on the boards and can run the floor better than a lot of other bigs. Once he adds a few pieces to his game, White may develop into one of the top 5 players in the state.
#18 | Jonathan Bradshaw Jonathan Bradshaw 6'4" | SF Ouachita | 2023 State LA | 6’4″ W | Ouachita
Bradshaw was one of the young players who Coach Madison depended on this season to provide scoring and an inside presence. While it might have taken a minute, Bradshaw rounded into form when the Lions need him after the turn of the calendar. Bradshaw can score at the basket and from deep. He is also a good rebounder in traffic. When his off the dribble and post up game expand, the sky’s the limit.
#21 | Zion McCoy Zion McCoy 6'1" | SG Northside | 2023 State LA | 6’1″ G | Northside
Northside may indeed have a gem in Zion McCoy Zion McCoy 6'1" | SG Northside | 2023 State LA . He is a shooter who is very accurate from deep. His form is excellent and his release is quick. While he plays more off the ball now, I can see McCoy being a combo guard that will be good at either position once his time is done. His development will only help Northside become better as a whole.
#23 | Omarion Miller Omarion Miller 6'2" | CG North Caddo | 2023 State LA | 6’2″ G | North Caddo
Miller may be one of the top receivers in the 2023 class. If he were just a basketball player, he might be just as good. Miller is good with the ball in his hands and knows how to get downhill with the best of them. His football build helps him absorb all types of contact when penetrating the paint. He either finishes or goes to the line each time however. Miller has dual threat written all over him goind forward.
#27 | Amir Rios Amir Rios 6'3" | SG East St. John | 2023 State LA | 6’3″ G | East St. John
Rios, as a sophomore, is one of those players that Clark Kellogg would call a “stat sheet stuffer.” Rios gives ESJ an above average defender who reads passing lanes well. He is a wing scorer who can score from all three levels. Rios is also a willing passer who makes smart, heady plays on the regular. Once he fills out his frame, Rios is going to be a hard guard for anyone who plays East St. John the next two years.
#31 | N’Derius Walker N’Derius Walker 6'0" | PG East Ascension | 2023 State LA | 6’0″ G | East Ascension
Walker is one of the more fearless point guards that Louisiana has regardless of class. He is a player who is not afraid to put his nose in the midst of the action. More times than not his effort yields good results. Walker is very good with his man-to-man defense. His hands are quick and he makes it hard for ballhandlers to run an offense. Walker keeps it up, he will be one of the top defensive guards in the state.
#32 | Devin Myers Devin Myers 5'10" | SG Levenworth | 2022 KS | 6’3″ G | Huntington
The Raiders always seem to have an athletic, wiry wing or guard in their midst and Devin Myers Devin Myers 5'10" | SG Levenworth | 2022 KS is the latest list in those types of guards. Myers is a high riser who operates mostly from the free throw line in. He has the ability to elevate over most players and shoot the mid-range jumper. Myers also uses his length to block shots around the rim. Look for Myers to be one of Huntington’s top players during next season.
#33 | Canin Jefferson Canin Jefferson 6'1" | PG Newman | 2023 State LA | 6’0″ G | Newman (pictured above)
Jefferson may share a backcourt with Chris Lockett Chris Lockett 6'5" | CG Isidore Newman | 2023 State #180 Nation LA ; however, he can definitely affect a game all on his own. He is an intelligent guard who is crafty and knows how to get to his spots. Because of that reason, he is very good at scoring when he is off the ball and knows how and where to find people when he has it. Jefferson is a heady guard who makes players around him better. He is a definite difference maker.
#35 | Joshua Washington Joshua Washington 6'6" | SF Jesuit | 2023 State LA | 6’5″ F | Jesuit
Washington is a legitimate post presence for Jesuit. He has the know how to operate in the paint and is good with getting his team second and third chances at the rim. Washington is also great at attacking the rim and getting fouled. He is a very difficult cover in the post because of this athletic ability. The more he improves and expands his game, the more Jesuit will become a threat going forward.
The class of 2023 is headed by Chris Lockett Chris Lockett 6'5" | CG Isidore Newman | 2023 State #180 Nation LA (Isidore Newman) and has plenty of talent players within the top 20. Look to see who ranks where in the latest rankings release from Prep Hoops Louisiana about the class of 2023. The previous release date was February 15.
