Continue ReadingThis Covid-19 high school basketball season has, shall we say, been an interesting one so far. But even a worldwide pandemic couldn’t stop the Philadelphia suburbs’ loaded Class of 2024 from putting on their big boy pants and contributing for their school’s varsity squad.
Below is a look at 2024 prospects from the suburban Philadelphia areas who are having a positive impact for their varsity teams during this unusual season.
Jaden Colzie Jaden Colzie 6'0" | PG Plymouth Whitemarsh | 2024 State PA – 5’9” / Plymouth Whitemarsh / Combo Guard: An ultra-quick backcourt player who can score at the rim and splash home threes, Colzie has been a starter this season and a major reason the Colonials have run up a 13-1 record. Colzie put up 21 against Wissahickon; 16 points vs Abington; and has contributed 15 points on several other nights. PW Head Coach Jim Donofrio noted, “His natural quickness, feel for changing speeds at the right time, scoring ability both driving and shooting, as well as vision of the floor more than compensates for his youth.” Donofrio continued, “His best quality is his competitive drive and ability to perform best when his best is required. That confidence and killer mentality will take him a long way.”
Nick Coval Nick Coval 6'1" | CG Parkland | 2024 State PA – 6’1” / Parkland / Shooting Guard: One of the elite 3-point shooters in Pennsylvania’s Class of 2024, Coval is a starter for Parkland who is averaging 16.8 ppg. Noteworthy performances from early on in his freshman season include scoring 23 pts vs William Allen HS; 20 against Dieruff and 15pts vs. the always tough Allentown Central Catholic. Parkland Head Coach Andrew Stephens had the following to say about this rising star, “He has a very bright future in basketball. He’s great with the ball and has a high basketball IQ. Nick is a pleasure to coach and be around. He makes all the other players around him better.”
Kaydin Ford Kaydin Ford 5'10" | PG Abington Friends | 2024 State PA – 5’7” / Abington Friends / Point Guard: In 2019-20 Ford was a starter and primary scorer on the JV roster as an 8th grader. So the leap to a starting role on the varsity roster for an undersized freshman guard has been a huge one. Still, Ford is contributing nicely for the AFS varsity team (10 ppg) and recently scored 12 points vs. Friends Select on 3/7 shooting from behind the arc. Assistant varsity coach Bartley Jeannoute emailed me these comments on Ford, “He is still adjusting to the pace of the game at that level and is quickly learning how to use his body as a smaller guard. He shows promise as a spot-up shooter.”
Moses Hipps Moses Hipps 6'4" | SG AZ Compass Prep | 2024 State AZ – 6’1” / Archbishop Carroll / Combo Guard: An elite level 3-point shooter with unlimited range, Hipps has been starting for Carroll and has seen a good deal of success scoring the ball. Most recently Hipps scored a career high 27 points vs Father Judge. Prior to that outburst, Hipps drained four 3PAs (4/8) and tallied 20 points total in Carroll’s win over St. Joe’s Prep. He also recorded 15 points vs LaSalle CHS and 12 pts vs. Cardinal O’Hara. Hipps excels at moving without the ball which makes him very difficult to guard. Complimenting Hipps’ outside shooting is his ability fill the wings on the break and his solid ball handling skills.
Kevin McCarthy – 6’2” / Freshman / Episcopal Academy / Shooting Guard: Head Coach Brian Shannahan is trying out different combinations in order to get a win for the Churchmen and McCarthy has been a nice find. McCarthy can really stroke the 3-ball and is an excellenet defender. Earlier this season the freshman posted 10 points against Haverford and 16 points (3 threes) vs Malvern Prep. Most recently he drained 5 threes agianst SCHA on his way to a career high 17 points. McCarthy is averaging 10 ppg and according to Coach Shannahan, McCarthy “is a 9th grader that can really score the basketball and is getting more and more comfortable playing on the high school level.”
Ty Mishock Ty Mishock 5'10" | PG Spring Ford | 2024 PA – 5’10” / Devon Prep / Combo Guard: “He has such composure on the floor and that is what really is amazing and truly sets him apart. You do not realize that he is a freshman playing in one of the best leagues in the country.” That’s a note Devon Prep Head Coach Jason Fisher emailed me on Mishock. In his first Philadelphia Catholic League game, Mishock scored 14 points and added 4 steals against Monsignor Bonner. He followed up that performance with 15 points, 4 assists and 2 steals against McDevitt. He showed a ton of poise in a win over St. Joe’s Prep with 7 points, 5 assists and the go ahead 3 with just under 2 minutes to play. Mishock then scored 14 points (4 threes) in a rematch with Bonner; 15 vs LaSalle CHS and 15 pts on 4 threes vs Archbishop Ryan.
Kirby Mooney Kirby Mooney 6'1" | SG William Tennent | 2024 State PA – 6’1” / William Tennent / Shooting Guard: An elite slasher who is capable of getting to, and finishing at the rim with either hand, Mooney has been swinging between the varsity and JV teams at William Tennent. He has been shooting lights from deep for the JV squad where he is averaging close to 18 ppg. At the varsity level he has been getting about 10 minutes per contest and recently scored 6 pts vs. Cheltenham. “He seems pretty comfortable on the court. He will have to step into a big role next year as he is the only underclassman playing varsity at this time. We will graduate 10 seniors from our varsity team this year.” commented Head Coach Robert Mulville.
