On Friday January 22nd I attended the Cibola at Basha second half and some of the second quarter plus went over to the 6A Chandler Wolves at the 6A Perry Pumas for the JV and Varsity.

Here were some observations from the three games I viewed:

Cibola at Basha (3 quarters)

#1 The Basha Bears have some vets and good younger players on varsity giving them a balanced team.

#2 Cibola’s [player_tooltip player_id="1007601" first="Eric" last="Ramirez"] is a nice sleeper in Yuma.

#3 Varsity standouts from Cibola at Basha

[player_tooltip player_id="1007601" first="Eric" last="Ramirez"] Cibola

-A good rebounder who will block shots in his area. Thinner frame and will need to add weight. Could be more aggressive but was also being doubled almost every play. He is a good passer out of the post (may be his best skill) and handles decent for size. An easy touch at the FT line. He is very fluid and skilled.

Quick notes from Basha varsity:

[player_tooltip player_id="809678" first="Trenton" last="McLaughlin"] Basha

-A catch-3pt shooter with a quick release. His step-into 3 is money. Not many better off the catch in the AIA. He is also getting way better vertically as an athlete.

[player_tooltip player_id="1120889" first="Torin" last="Bosch"] Basha

-A brand new player to the state has a good physique. He can shoot the 3 and has a good handle. He is also a decent athlete who can throw it down on the break

[player_tooltip player_id="809721" first="Thomas" last="Hastings"] Basha

-The senior PG is poised and controlled. He handles pressure and he has a nice stroke from deep. Him and McLaughlin will be tough to handle all season.

[player_tooltip player_id="1064158" first="Christian" last="Warren"] Basha

-The thick young forward who can really shoot it. He can drive and kick it and plays with a high IQ. He is a tough rebounder in his area with good hands.

[player_tooltip player_id="1014670" first="Ty" last="Sandoval"] Basha

-A pure PG who is a really smart passer plus is a very good defender on the ball. He is willing to take a charge and give up his body for the team. He pushes the ball just as good as anyone in 6A in the open court.

Chandler at Perry

#4 Chandler has some nice young players for the future on JV and varsity.

#5 Perry has some of the top non-seniors starting on varsity.

#6 Two sophs stood out from Perry in the JV game.

[player_tooltip player_id="1120857" first="Daylen" last="Dewberry"] Perry

-Skilled and fluid forward can shoot it and rip through plus score it in traffic with a nice handle, He has made strides since last year and his skill looks more polished. He can turn around and fade away to score it in the post. He rebounds in area with good length and strength and smartly moves without the ball.

McGuire Andrus PG 5’8 2023 Perry

-A tough and skilled PG who can really shoot it. He is fearless and plays with a high IQ on defense to collect steals, rebound and block shots. He has a euro step, he can hit from mid-range plus the 3. A little undersized but competes bigger then his size may suggest.

#7 Four sophs stood out from Perry in the JV game and all played some on varsity.

[player_tooltip player_id="1120855" first="Kevin" last="Sias"] Chandler

-A slick ball handler with good speed and a tighter handle. He has nice skill with a floater game and can hit the 3. He can play on or off the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id="937192" first="Tyson" last="Wheeler"] Chandler

-A strong forward who grabs rebounds in bunches in and out of his area. He blocks shots and uses his strength to score inside plus shoots it from mid-range.

[player_tooltip player_id="1120854" first="Roman" last="Cummings"] Chandler

-A long and lean forward who is very fluid and can handle it decently. He can rip through plus shoot it from mid and in. Shows nice upside.

[player_tooltip player_id="1120856" first="Justin" last="Hodgins"] Chandler

-One of the more skilled players in the program. His 3-ball is clean plus he has the runner and can pull from mid-range. He handles the ball well and can play some one for them. He is probably a more natural two with his sweet stroke.

Varsity game:

#8 [player_tooltip player_id="809699" first="Carson" last="Kelly"] didn’t play for Chandler, and the game was obviously way different.

#9 [player_tooltip player_id="809683" first="Nicholas" last="Riley"] from Chandler is tough to handle.

#10 Perry trio of [player_tooltip player_id="701228" first="Dylan" last="Anderson"], [player_tooltip player_id="703821" first="Christian" last="Tucker"] and [player_tooltip player_id="831114" first="Cody" last="Williams"] are very tough to defend.

#11 Perry looks like a Final-4 contender.

#12 Here were the Varsity standouts:

Perry 69 Chandler 39 (unofficial stats)

[player_tooltip player_id="701228" first="Dylan" last="Anderson"] Perry (19 pts 12 rebs 5 blks)

-A skilled big man has a stronger base and shoots the mid-post shot impressively. It is very quick with little movement. His jump hook shot looked more polished then ever. He attacked the ball at its highest point for rebounds and made good passes to teammates plus blocked shots. He walled up on defense with his 7’3 wingspan and made it very difficult for anyone to score in the paint.

[player_tooltip player_id="703821" first="Christian" last="Tucker"] Perry (18 pts 6 rebs 1 ast 2 stls)

-A quickly improving athlete and player. He grew the two inches or so since last year and his athleticism has clearly kicked in. His deep ball looks better and has a nice burst to the rim to finish off layups with either hand. He also has the euro step and floater. He is quick on the ball defensively and makes good reads.

[player_tooltip player_id="831114" first="Cody" last="Williams"] Perry (16 pts 2 ast 1 stl)

-The long wing was allowed to handle it more to make plays and has some impressive passes to teammates. He hit two catch-3’s plus mid. He also takes unusually long strides to get into the lane and finish off tougher layups including a nice euro in traffic. His versatility as a defender makes him the prospect he is. He can cover the 1-4 in HS and rebound plus block shots out of area.

[player_tooltip player_id="973585" first="Elijah" last="Burlend"] Perry

-A top tier passer makes others better around him. He has a good feel for the game, he grew at least two inches and can shoot it from the 3 plus get into the lane then make a pass. He will get his chance next year to shine.

[player_tooltip player_id="809683" first="Nicholas" last="Riley"] Chandler (15 pts 10 rebs 3 blks)

-Considering the height difference, Riley played well. He attacked Anderson as much as he could with his body/girth and strength. He went to the chest of him and got some hook shots in and tough layups. Anderson did block him 5 times but he didn’t back down at all and grabbed tough rebounds plus had multiple blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id="996165" first="Darren" last="Nelms"] Chandler (7 pts 1 ast)

-Without [player_tooltip player_id="809699" first="Carson" last="Kelly"] playing, Nelms was inserted into the starting-5 and held his own. He has a stronger frame and defends tough on the ball. He made some nice reads plus he hit one 3 plus two mid-range jumpers.
