Solid slate of game to get the week started with some close games that came down to the wire. I was able to keep up with a few games. Here are players who stood out around the state.

[player_tooltip player_id="965808" first="Mason" last="Black"] – Falcon

In Falcon’s blowout win, it was their junior captain and best player in [player_tooltip player_id="965808" first="Mason" last="Black"] who got the job done. Falcon goes as he goes, and to begin the season; Black has been on a tear. Black has been efficient, and with the wins have come the attention. He has been a notable scorer since he entered high school, but the wins were not necessarily there. Now that they are winning pay attention to what we have been seeing for two seasons now. Black is one of the best mid-range shooters in the state, and he gets to his spots and makes teams pay. He was an efficient 11-15 from the field as he led all scorers with 26 points on the night. He also had six boards, and when he is in a groove, it is a great thing to watch. Make sure to give Black a look.

[player_tooltip player_id="1051473" first="DJ" last="Johnson"] – D’Evelyn

In D’Evelyns blow out win over Alameda, it was the Jaguars leading scorer on the season that stepped up and made it difficult for Alameda to get anything at all going. Johnson excels in these up and down games as he is athletically gifted and wants to play fast. Johnson is a high flier that cannot be stopped in the open court, wants to dunk the ball, and uses his leaping ability to create baskets. Johnson had a game-high 23-points, and his four steals turned into baskets on the opposite end. He is a player to watch moving forward and is having a solid season thus far.

[player_tooltip player_id="759281" first="Brock" last="Mishak"] – Fossil Ridge

Mishak did exactly what he has been doing all season long in the Sabercats blowout win over Monarch. Score – essentially whenever he wanted. Mishak is a gifted scorer that can score at all three levels. He is appearing to look a bit taller and has used his length to his ability inside. He finishes nicely around the basket, moves with a purpose, and finished right at his season average of 20-points in the game. Mishak was everywhere on the floor. He had eight rebounds, dished out five assists, and got to the FT line. Fossil Ridge needs him to remain aggressive, and it does not look like he will be changing that at all. Expect more big scoring nights from him.

[player_tooltip player_id="916976" first="Gavin" last="Poxson"] – Legacy

Do not look now, but, Legacy is 4-0 on the season. The Lightning are one of the surprise teams to begin the season as they have come together and locked in on both ends of the floor. Legacy has been up and down the past two seasons, but one consistent thing has been Poxson. Poxson is off to a sensational start to the season as he is at 17.8 points and 6.5 rebounds a game, and this was a game where he took what the defense gave him. Poxson had a game-high 24 points and also snagged seven boards as well. He has pushed the pace, scored both inside and out, and if he can continue on his hot-wave, then maybe Legacy can continue to climb.

[player_tooltip player_id="918906" first="Aidan" last="Kuhl"] – Rocky Mountain

If you’ve watched Rocky Mountain play, Kuhl looks a bit different than every other player in the game. He is quick; he is smart, he moves with a purpose. He reads and understands that defenses are trying to limit him and only him, and he and his teammates do a great job of freeing him up for just a second. He does have to force the issue a bit, and his efficiency is suffering a bit as a result, but the Lobos go as he goes. He will do ANY and EVERYTHING he can to keep the team in the game, and in their win over a talented Boulder team, he finished with 25-points in the game. He attacked the guards inside, forcing Boulder to send him to the FT line, and he did plenty of damage there. Kuhl is one of the players in the state that you can rely on to carry such a load and still play within himself. Solid game for him.
