The games are real. Following the longest layoff in...ever, the Metro Nashville teams began what will be a severely truncated season this week. Friday two games caught my eye. These are the evaluated players.

Pearl-Cohn versus Whites Creek

Pearl-Cohn w/ Starters*

#1 PG
#3 [player_tooltip player_id="775563" first="Antonio" last="Anthony"]* (2021)
#12 Joseph Allen (2021)
#14 JaVan Lynn* (2022)
#21 [player_tooltip player_id="537280" first="Jalen" last="Qualls"]* (2021)
#24 Douglas Hooten* (2021)

Joseph Allen, Douglas Hooten, and [player_tooltip player_id="775563" first="Antonio" last="Anthony"] have been part of two State Tournament teams (2019, 2020).

[player_tooltip player_id="775563" first="Antonio" last="Anthony"] showed off brilliant closing speed. He is an elite defender with plus strength at the point guard spot. Anthony cleverly, perhaps at the coach’s direction, posted up his defender on the games second and third possessions. Even though he was called for a questionable charge on the latter [player_tooltip player_id="775563" first="Antonio" last="Anthony"] displayed a versatility and keen awareness of the game situation. Rusty early maybe, Antonio committed two turnovers. After the second, instead of pouting or loafing he engaged immediately and forced a five-second call on the Whites Creek point guard. The lateral mobility is elite.

Douglas Hooten played with tremendous exuberance. Vastly undersized for a college big, Hooten is a junkyard dog at the high school level. Powerful, invested. Hooten’s touch around the basket is merely average and his shot selection, at least in his season debut, was lagging. His two greatest contributions were energy and toughness.

JaVan Lynn gave the Firebirds a wonderful stability. Whites Creek was pummeled Friday night and the guardplay of Lynn made it impossible for the Cobras to mount any kind of meaningful run. Lynn handled fullcourt pressure nearly the entire game and yet he very rarely committed a turnover. [player_tooltip player_id="775563" first="Antonio" last="Anthony"] was more prone to making an errant pass. Lynn’s handle was tremendous. He also showed an ability to play at different speeds.

Whites Creek

???

Hume-Fogg versus Maplewood

Hume-Fogg

#3
#4 [player_tooltip player_id="983695" first="Malachi" last="Parham"]* (2021)
#5
#10 Eli Holland (2021)

Wonderful outlet pass from Malachi from halfcourt followed by a tremendous block and another fantastic outlet pass by Parham. All this took place within 20 seconds and calcified Parham’s place as the most college-ready player on the glossy, fresh floor.

36-32 Maplewood after 3Q.

Maplewood

#1 Anthony Garrett* (2021)
#3 Dontarious Rutherford* (2021) 6’2"
#10
#11 Donald Trammell (2023)
#12 Jerome Corley*
#20 Christopher Williams (2024)

Jerome Corley looked ragged at the free throw line. Corley was very quick with the basketball.

Dontarious Rutherford ripped [player_tooltip player_id="983695" first="Malachi" last="Parham"] mid-crossover and earned his way to the free throw line on the ensuing possession. Very quick hands and feet.

Follow @PrepHoopsTN.
