MUSCATINE -- Camanche is headed back to the 2A state tournament after a huge second-half run helped lift the Indians to a 58-38 win over West Burlington on Saturday night.

Trailing 30-21 with 5:30 left in the third quarter, Camanche head coach Josh Davis threw a 2-2-1 zone press at the Falcons, and a massive run ensued. Camanche outscored the Falcons 27-2 over the next ten minutes to take complete control of the contest and cruise to the program’s second straight state tournament appearance.

West Burlington’s quickness was a problem for the Indians early on, as guard [player_tooltip player_id="964909" first="Darian" last="Johnson"] led an attack that was consistently getting to the rim against the Camanche defense. The Falcons quickness on the other end of the floor was also an issue, holding Camanche to just 19 first-half points. The press was the game-changer, as West Burlington didn’t handle it well, committing a bevy of turnovers that led to easy points at the other end of the floor.

Camanche (18-6) has earned the seventh seed at the 2A state tournament and will open with second-seeded Western Christian on Tuesday, March 9. The Indians were led by [player_tooltip player_id="964881" first="Zayne" last="Feller"], who had a game-high 18 points. [player_tooltip player_id="682268" first="Zach" last="Erwin"] chipped in 17 and [player_tooltip player_id="962661" first="Mike" last="Delzell"] had 10, including a pair of big 3s during the huge Camanche run.

West Burlington’s season ends with a 16-7 record, one of the best seasons in school history. The Falcons were led by [player_tooltip player_id="964848" first="Marvion" last="Jackson"], who concluded his career with a strong 15-point performance.

Jackson will play college football at Missouri Western, but he has a lot of potential on the hardwood. A big, athletic 6-5 forward, he's a solid ball-handler and passer, a switchable defender and he has a great frame to continue building on. He knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, and that looks like an area of his game that he could still improve on, and he uses his size, athleticism and physicality to get to the rim. He finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Johnson got off to a strong start for the Falcons, using his quickness to get to the bucket, and his athleticism to cause problems on the defensive end. The 5-10 lead guard has a great first step that he uses to blast by his defender, and he blocked a pair of shots early in the game to set the tone for the Falcons defensively. He finished with 9 points, 3 assists, and 2 blocks.

The 6-4 forward has really developed into an impact player for the Indians. An efficient scorer on the block, he runs the floor well, establishes good early position, has excellent hands and great touch around the bucket. A versatile defender who can comfortably switch, he did a great job playing on-ball defense against Jackson when the 6-5 big man was bringing the ball up the floor and trying to initiate offense. Feller finished with 18 points on 8-10 shooting with 6 rebounds.

[player_tooltip player_id="682268" first="Zach" last="Erwin"], Camanche (2022)

The most talented player on the floor, Erwin helped spark the big run with his ability to get to the rim. He sparked the Indians on offense and was a key piece of the press that forced a multitude of turnovers. The 6-6 wing is a good ball-handler who uses his size and physicality to bully his smaller defender and get to the bucket. He's a good shooter and talented playmaker who sees the floor well and is a good passer. He finished with 17 points, 11 coming in the second-half, including 9-10 from the free-throw line.

[player_tooltip player_id="962661" first="Mike" last="Delzell"], Camanche (2022)

A strong lefty forward, Delzell made the only two 3-pointers of the night for the Indians, showing a smooth lefty stroke. He moves well without the ball in his hands and was great on the glass, pulling down 7 rebounds in the win. He finished with 10 points on 4-6 shooting and made an impact on the defensive end as well with his length and athleticism.

[player_tooltip player_id="796151" first="Jordan" last="Lawrence"], Camanche (2021)

A superb athlete, Lawrence had a quiet game by his standards, but found a way to make an impact even though he wasn't scoring much. The 5-10 guard does an excellent job on the defensive end of the floor, a strong on-ball defender who also does a great job reading and jumping passing lanes that lead to easy buckets on the other end. He had 8 points and 5 rebounds in the win.
