The high school hoops season is quickly approaching playoff time in February. Here’s a look at some forwards and bigs on the rise in the 2021 class.

[player_tooltip player_id="838050" first="Vante" last="Hutcherson"] | 6’9 Forward/Center | Wayne Country Day

Hutcherson is a big man prospect that’s having a productive senior season for Wayne Country Day. He’s putting up 11.7 ppg and 12.9 rpg as the Chargers are 14-2 on the season and look to return to the NCISAA 2A State Title game. If they do, look for Hutcherson to lead the charge in the paint. He’s been a double-double machine for them in the frontcourt, racking up 10 double-doubles through 14 contests. He’s got next-level ability with his ability to protect the paint and finish around the rim. He recently picked up an offer from Johnston Community College.

[player_tooltip player_id="1105922" first="Julian" last="Williams"] | 6’9 Forward/Center | Northwood Temple

Williams leads the Northwood Temple Eagles in scoring (16.6 ppg) and rebounds (7.6 rpg) while showing off his prowess as a presence in the paint. He put up 13 points and eight rebounds in an upset victory over Wayne Country Day on Friday night. He uses his size and footwork to be a force with the ball in his hands in the paint and is shooting 67 percent from the field in 2020-21. He knows how to make an impact in the frontcourt when he’s on the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id="770286" first="Akhiris" last="Holden"] | 6’5 Forward/Wing | Henderson Collegiate

Holden is already averaging a double-double through the Henderson Collegiate Pride’s first four games of the season. He’s producing 16.8 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 2.0 spg, 2.0 bpg and 1.3 apg in the first four contests, showing off his ability to fill up the stat sheet on the wing and in the paint. He attacks the rim with purpose and has shown his growth by emerging as the team’s leading scorer in 2020-21. He’s also got three double-doubles already too, putting his relentless motor on display. He’s an athletic prospect college coaches will want to get eyes on.

[player_tooltip player_id="1098343" first="David" last="Lash"] | 6’5 Forward/Center | Charlotte Christian

Lash has been a consistent face in the Charlotte Christian rotation in his senior season. He’s producing 11.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg in the frontcourt as [player_tooltip player_id="854884" first="Bryce" last="Cash"] and company operate on the wing. While he doesn’t stand out on the stat sheet a lot, he uses his length and size well to be a presence on both ends while staying out of foul trouble. He’s generated double-figures in rebounds in three contests in 2020-21 and has yet to go a game without at least four rebounds. Colleges in need of a 4/5 man, look no further.

[player_tooltip player_id="1105085" first="Quinton" last="Scheuermann"] | 6’10 Forward/Center | United Faith Christian

Scheuermann has been a familiar face on PrepHoopsNC given his contributions on the United Faith Christian Academy rotation. He’s a 6-foot-10 big man that’s come along nicely as a prospect that can protect the rim, rebound and be a presence in the paint on both ends. He leads the team in rebounds per game (7.7) and ranks second in blocks per game (1.6) while producing 6.4 ppg on the 2020-21 season. He’s a traditional big man that stays within himself on the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id="838058" first="Robert" last="Wright"] | 6’8 Forward/Center | Trinity Christian

Wright is a big man prospect with raw potential as a paint stopper and on-ball defender. He’s posted 5.5 ppg and 4.8 rpg through their first 10 games in the frontcourt. He’s an active presence on the glass, especially on the offensive end, using his length and strength to make an impact. He’s a strong finisher around the rim as well and makes plays when given touches.

[player_tooltip player_id="1110457" first="Yohann" last="Axel-Sam"] | 6’5 Power Forward | Northwood Temple

Axel-Sam has been a solid frontcourt piece this season alongside [player_tooltip player_id="1105922" first="Julian" last="Williams"]. He’s putting up 6.1 ppg and 4.6 rpg in 2020-21 and has put himself on the radar given his strong frame and ability to battle in the post. He does well with his back to the basket but is mobile enough to defend on the perimeter on the defensive end. He’s got room to grow still and looks like a solid prospect for colleges in need of a power forward.

[player_tooltip player_id="1120758" first="Javonnie" last="Barker"] | 6’7 Forward | Fayetteville Christian

Barker has flown under the radar a bit being at Fayetteville Christian, but he’s starting to garner some attention in the 2021 class. He’s been a presence in their rotation this season, averaging 13.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg and 1.6 bpg through their first 11 games of the season. He put up 22 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks against Parrott Academy. He’s an emerging forward to watch in the Fayetteville area.
