Everyone is always interested in big men, and we’ll take a look at some of the top bigs across the state that are uncommitted as of late January.
Bryson Spell Bryson Spell 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2021 State VA | 6’8” | Cape Henry
Spell has gotten off to a great start for Cape this season and should be coming to a decision here soon as he has plenty of suitors going after him. He’s a guy who has developed nicely from both a physical standpoint and in his skill set and game, and he looks much more aggressive as he’s extended his game from just a shooter to a guy who can put it on the deck, score in the paint and is a good passer. The stretch big man holds offers from Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Arizona State, ODU, George Washington and more.
Oluwasegun Durosinmi Oluwasegun Durosinmi 6'9" | C Virginia Academy | 2021 State VA | 6’10” | VA Academy
“Duro” is a more throwback big man that is going to get the job done with his mix of size, strength and athleticism in the paint. He’s a mobile guy who can rebound and run the floor with his guards, he can bury guys in the paint and use his strength to clear out space and he’s a good shot blocker as well. He’s still a little bit raw but he has the size and frame you can’t teach and a high ceiling to go along with it.
Trenton Picott Trenton Picott 6'7" | PF South County | 2021 State VA | 6’7” | South County
Picott is an underrated big in the NOVA area who wasn’t the biggest name on a South County team that was co-state champions last year, but was just as important as anyone and is a reason they’re considered a favorite to repeat this year. At 6’7” with good length and a strong frame, he’s a good athlete that can play in transition and rebound on both ends and he’s a big impact guy on the defensive end in the paint. He’s a guy who has continued to develop on both ends and has a blue collar mentality that makes him easy to play with.
Tyrell Harris Tyrell Harris 6'6" | PF Potomac | 2021 State VA | 6’6” | Potomac
Another underrated guy in the NOVA area, Harris is a versatile four man that is a walking mismatch and can impact the game in a number of ways. He’s a high motor and athletic player who can hit the glass on both ends and play in transition, he’s skilled enough to score in the paint but can also step outside where he can put it on the deck and make shots from deep and he’s a big time finisher above the rim as well. His versatility can be seen on the defensive end as well as he can switch on guards and can protect the rim as well.
Jayson Harris Jayson Harris 6'6" | PF Menchville | 2021 State VA | 6’7” | Menchville
Harris has gone from being underrated to one of the top bigs in the 757 over the past few years, and his mix of strength and skill in the post makes him hard to guard. He’s a brute in the paint who can rebound on both ends and can create space in the paint to score, and he’s improved on his ability to play on the perimeter and make shots from behind the arc. He holds offers from multiple D2 programs including Allen University, WV Wesleyan, LeMoyne-Owen and more.
Evan Castellanos Evan Castellanos 6'6" | PF Hermitage | 2021 State VA | 6’6” | Hermitage
Castellanos is one of the best guys in the Richmond area that coaches don’t know about, and part of that has to do with some bad luck with injuries. A smooth 6’6” big that brings a mix of physicality and finesse as he can guard and rebound in the paint, but he’s also a guy who can put it on the deck and get to spots and make tough shots out past the three-point line. He’s a good athlete and a highly skilled mismatch big man that still has a lot of room to get better.
Cephus Wilson-Bahun | 6’6” | John Paul the Great
A high academic and high motor big man, Wilson-Bahun is a small school’s dream big as he’s not only a very good kid but he’s a big time athlete that can make plays above the rim on both ends of the floor. He’s long and very mobile as he can run the floor and rebounds on both ends, he can block shots and switch onto guards defensively and he brings energy with put backs and big dunks both in traffic and in transition.
Spencer Legg Spencer Legg 6'7" | PF Woodberry Forest | 2021 State VA | 6’7” | Woodberry Forest
Another guy that more coaches need to know about, Legg is a stretch big man with a great skill set that can be productive in a number of ways. While he’s 6’7”, he’s a walking mismatch as he has guard skills in the fact that he can put it on the deck and is a knock down shooter from deep when left open. His ability to stretch the floor for guards and still be able to be a screener and rebounder makes him very tough to game plan for.
