Day Two of the Florida Get Down had one of the most action-packed days of basketball of the season. With 22 teams taking the floor, there’s no way I’ll be able to cover all of the talent with just one notebook. So, here are the standouts of Day 2 of the Florida Get Down, Part 1.

St. Francis Catholic v. P.K. Yonge, 53-50 P.K. Yonge wins

Aidan Newman - 2021, 5’11”, St. Francis

Aidan is definitely “volume” in a very true sense. He isn’t the most efficient scorer, but is a very effective one. He scored 12 of his teams 21 in the first half and is relentless in shooting and going to the rim. He isn’t scared of defenders that are much larger than him and is aggressive in every aspect of his game. He finished with 18 points in the close game against P.K. Yonge.

Jalen Jerkins - 2022, 6’1”, P.K. Yonge

Jerkins was the most reliable man on the floor for the Blue Wave as they fought one out against the Wolves. Jerkins had a big pair of 3s in the first half and proved to be a steady hand at the free throw line, going 5-5 and pushing the game out of reach for St. Francis. He finished with 17 points and was the leading scorer for the winning team and won Player of the Game.

Santa Fe Catholic v. Santa Fe, 61-53 Santa Fe wins

Dontrell Jenkins - 2023, 5’7”, Santa Fe

Jenkins is the perfect example of the phrase "heart over height." His 5’7" frame did not slow him down at all while playing against a tough Santa Fe Catholic team. Jenkins is great at creating space and getting to his spots to hit mid range jumpers. He’s a good perimeter shooter and a solid guard in terms of handling and passing. He has good jump shot elevation which makes him able to create and score at a higher level than his 5’7” frame suggests he should. He has elite hustle and good passing. He finished with 20 points in the win and was super effective with teammate [player_tooltip player_id="714783" first="Ernest" last="Ross"] being slowed down by [player_tooltip player_id="818684" first="Alvin" last="Tumblin"].

[player_tooltip player_id="829403" first="Trey" last="Lane"] - 2022, 6’1”, Santa Fe Catholic

Trey is the definition of sharpshooter. His shooting was on in the second quarter and he was the only reason Santa Fe Catholic was in it against a great Santa Fe team. He has some work to do in some departments, mostly in finishing at the basket, but with shooting he seems comfortable and mature. He finished with 5 threes and 17 points while leading his team in scoring. He showed glimpses of his other guard skills, such as ballhandling and breaking presses, and showed his complete space creation package while being guarded by stingy defender Dontrell Jenkins. He impressed me and will be a force for this team next year.

Oldsmar Christian v. Calvary Christian, 85-73 Oldsmar wins

[player_tooltip player_id="953083" first="Bryce" last="Johnson"] - 2021, 6’3”, Oldsmar Christian

When I started watching this game, I was initially noting [player_tooltip player_id="953083" first="Bryce" last="Johnson"] for being quietly athletic. I was noting how he is an above average finisher a good jumper who can force defenders to make tough decisions under the basket. I saw him as a decent shooter with a full guard bag who could probably transition to the next level. And then, he took over. In front of my eyes I watched one of the craziest strings of scoring I have seen this year. A tear of three pointers, a 3rd quarter buzzer beater, and FOUR straight threes all fell for Johnson on his way to an incredible 30-point performance in the win. This kid is the REAL DEAL in Florida and one of the best guards I’ve watched this year.

[player_tooltip player_id="829492" first="Trevor" last="Parks"] - 2022, 6’3”, Calvary Christian

Jeez, this kid is a shooter. He got hot and completely took over the game in the second quarter and kept a cold Calvary Christian team in it. He scored 12 points in the second and 14 total on his way to winning MVP for his team.

Providence School v. Carrollwood, 72-60 Providence wins

[player_tooltip player_id="953478" first="Jack" last="Dillard"] - 2021, 6’1”, Providence

Dillard is a natural leader and an underrated scorer for this team. Surrounded by great scorers like [player_tooltip player_id="818650" first="James" last="Lee Repass"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1055748" first="Jaylen" last="Robinson"], it is easy to get lost, but Dillard holds his own on this squad. He is great defensively and is very smart about the game. He plays a mentally tough game, and didn’t engage with other players on the floor who were trying to get into his head. He’s not the strongest or most athletic, but that doesn’t stop him from being effective. He doesn’t have a deep bag, but an incredibly sturdy one and is a great leader. He finished with 16 points.

[player_tooltip player_id="829423" first="Seth" last="Allen"] - 2022, 6’4”, Providence

Talk about responding when your number is called! Allen, as the 6th man for this team, came up big in the win. He was hitting threes and finishing good passes for big points at key moments. He was very needed for this team against a strong opponent and posted 15 points while earning himself Game Co-MVP with Dillard.
