Winner outlasted 9th ranked Chamberlain 59-52 to improve to 6-1 on the season. Winner was led by the 1-2 punch of [player_tooltip player_id="975500" first="Brady" last="Fritz"] and [player_tooltip player_id="963824" first="Blake" last="Volmer"].

Warrior Ball Movement. Winner shot an outstanding 23-41 for the game. With the Cubs short-handed a top player, their defense moved slower and could not keep up with the continuity of the Winner offense. Ball movement was rapid and player movement off ball was a constant. Winner spent most of the game taking rhythm threes, open transition lay-ups, and high percentage halfcourt shots. They totaled 17 assists on the 23 makes with junior Slade Cournoyer producing a team high six assists. Guys like Cournoyer and junior Jackson Vesely did a lot of the dirty work away from the big point totals while Fritz and Volmer took advantage scoring efficiently.

Two Way Sophomore. Six-foot-2/6-foot-3 sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="963824" first="Blake" last="Volmer"] had what could be called a breakout showing. He came into the game averaging 15 points and nine boards a contest so he’s played well, but tonight he denied Priebe throughout the night making every Priebe shot attempt a contested one. Volmer than went the other way and scored an efficient 17 points making six of nine attempts. Volmer knocked out three shots at the arc and attacked slowly rotating defenses for completions in the paint. High percentage shooting, more solid rebounding (five boards), solid D, and 17 points on only nine shots. A veteran showing from a young standout.

Early Jumpers, Late Attacks. [player_tooltip player_id="975500" first="Brady" last="Fritz"] is an All State player. This has been known. Through seven games his 22 points on nearly 50 percent shooting at a guard spot along with five rebounds and three assists a game continues to show an all-state resume as does the 6-1 record. Tonight Fritz had 22 points on 7 of 12 shooting using two big scoring bursts and a patient approach to help his team win. Early in the game Fritz looked like a shot creation artist using the space created by the screen to knock out four early three-pointers. In the second Brady kicked in that incredible speed for a dunk, a full court sprinting lay-up, an attack for foul shots makes, and a behind the back change of direction into a bursting finish. A pair of runs, and another win.

Injury Setback. [player_tooltip player_id="975571" first="Cameron" last="Caldwell"] hurt his ankle in the first quarter which deeply savaged Chamberlain’s ability to score. Caldwell is part of a great 1-2 punch that has helped the Cubs win their first three games. Without Cameron the Cubs struggled to defend wings, and they had a hard time creating good shots. [player_tooltip player_id="975580" first="Hayden" last="Evans"] stepped in to score 11 points and grab eight boards while 6-foot-7 junior post Sellyck McManus had eight points and seven boards, but there wasn’t enough offensive depth to get the win. Hopefully Caldwell recovers so Chamberlain can get back to full strength soon.

Smooth Game of Priebe. Senior guard [player_tooltip player_id="757863" first="Drayton" last="Priebe"] was asked to do a lot tonight. He had to score in bulk against an athletic defender and several Winner defenders supplying deeper help than they normally would. Priebe’s hesitation dribbles, his freezing crossover separation attacks, and his jump-stop into playmaking definitely caught the eye. Priebe is surely a senior with some scoring juice. He also has a soft touch on balance or at times off balance floating the ball softly through the air. As the game wore on Drayton had to work harder and harder for clean looks leading to 11 of 28 shooting for the game (two threes, two foul shots made). This is certainly a senior with a fun scoring feel to his game.
