Yesterday our updated 2022 MD/DC player rankings published and as always, there are tons of takeaways that will be dissected in the flow of content throughout the week. To kick things off, the crew wanted to address some FAQ’s that come with the updated ranking process. Adam Ayalew, Houston Wilson and myself addressed three questions in roundtable form regarding the 2021 rankings.

1. For the 2022s that you were able to see this summer/fall, who made their case to be moved up in the rankings?

Giacubeno: [player_tooltip player_id="777071" first="Christian" last="Winborne"] received a small boost in the rankings but took over as the top point guard slot for his play this summer with Team Thrill. The 6-foot-2 floor general put all on notice that he isn’t just a three-level scorer. Winborne is a consistent creator for others and sees the game at an advanced level. The competitive edge he brings to the defensive end forces his teammates to match his effort and it results in more wins for his team.

Ayalew: I think [player_tooltip player_id="1049816" first="Ty" last="Williams"] and [player_tooltip player_id="904679" first="Jacory" last="Wilkes"] are two under-the-radar guys who’ve eared their respective places. Williams is a big point guard who plays both ends but also plays the right way. And Wilkes is a forceful paint presence who cleans the glass, protects the rim, and finishes with the best.

Wilson: [player_tooltip player_id="904642" first="Jared" last="Turner"] is starting to turn into the prospect we thought he would turn into when he was younger. Turner is an absolute sniper from behind the arc and we saw that this summer. If Gonzaga is able to have a season this winter, Turner will be one to watch as he is blossoming into a solid mid major level prospect.

2. Give a name who was expected to take on a bigger role this season and as a result, could’ve seen a significant boost in recruitment.

Giacubeno: [player_tooltip player_id="777095" first="Bryce" last="Lindsay"] already has witnessed his recruitment increase significantly, but taking over as a primary ball-handler for Poly this winter would’ve given programs clarity on his ability to fit the point guard mold. Lindsay is one of the best long-range shooters in his class nationally and while he proved his all-around game this summer playing next to Winborne for Team Thrill, he would’ve further confirmed his skillset with the Engineers.

Ayalew: All signs were pointing to a breakout season in the WCAC for [player_tooltip player_id="904626" first="Shane" last="Lancaster"] because the Cadets lost starting guards Ish Leggett and Manzie Wilson. It’s probably just a matter of time before Lancaster’s stock skyrockets. [player_tooltip player_id="904673" first="Miles" last="Hicks"] from St. Albans is another. The Bulldogs lost their leading scorer, Mike Katsock, to graduation. Hicks has improved drastically. He should have both the experience and confidence to be a consistent producer in the IAC.

Wilson: We started to see some glimpses of the upside and potential 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="777068" first="George" last="Perkins"] has. He has gained weight and started to impact the game more. This junior season would have been big for him and I think he was starting to turn the corner which would have definitely boosted his recruitment for some of the low and mid major schools in the area.

3. Who are some under the radar prospects that smaller colleges should be tracking sooner rather than later?

Giacubeno: A few names come to mind that fit the "smaller college" blueprint. [player_tooltip player_id="1110551" first="Aidan" last="Mess"] was primed to play a key role for Mount St. Joseph after transferring from Reservoir. The 6-foot-7 forward is a workhorse who competes with an endless motor and continues to build on his overall offensive package.

[player_tooltip player_id="904677" first="Jalen" last="Marshall"] brings valuable intangibles to Gilman next to Winborne in the backcourt. He’s a defensive pest who has strength to guard bigger matchups, is a blur in the open floor and has improved his jumper over the last calendar year.

Ayalew: [player_tooltip player_id="1110553" first="Michael" last="Henderson Jr."] from St. Maria Goretti. The TC Williams transfer is a super quick pass-first point guard with the potential to be an absolute menace defensively. [player_tooltip player_id="904682" first="Kyle" last="Pulliam"] from Good Counsel continues to grow and get better. If I were a small school I’d be trying to build that relationship now while tracking him closely.

Wilson: I have always liked the production [player_tooltip player_id="904652" first="Cam’ron" last="Brown"] has whenever he is on the court. Brown is a junior at Archbishop Carroll and has good playmaking skills that are always visible. He is a smart player that always seems to make the right read or decision whenever the ball is in his hands which ultimately helps his team win games.

[player_tooltip player_id="904629" first="Quinn" last="Clark"] could possibly see his recruitment spark more than “smaller school” potential but as of right now Clark is guy that could be a force down low for some smaller schools.
