One of the coolest things about the new Prep Hoops Rankings is that they automatically rank the players by positions as well. Within the rankings you can see the rankings for point guards, combo guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards and centers. However, I have a different way of thinking of the game now, and believe the positions in basketball are now just guards, wings and bigs.

So we’ll be breaking down the top 25 of each in those positions. Here’s a look at the bigs ranked between 15 and 6 in the updated rankings for the class of 2021.

15) [player_tooltip player_id="697136" first="Jayson" last="Fain"] | 6’6” | Carlisle (#50 Overall)

Fain is a guy who saw his stock rise this summer with Virginia Premier as he picked up a slew of offers in July, but I’d still say he’s a little under the radar with his versatility and ability to play multiple positions. While I consider him a small ball four kind of guy at the next level, he’s very comfortable playing on the perimeter where he can put it on the deck and get by people and he can make shots from multiple levels as well. He’s a good athlete who brings it on both ends and he’s chock full of potential moving forward.

14) [player_tooltip player_id="798707" first="Demetri" last="Gardner"] | 6’5” | John Handley (#48 Overall)

While there’s tons of overlooked guys every year in VA, Gardner might be the most overlooked guy on this list and is arguably the best player in the Winchester area. An All-State selection last year, Gardner is a versatile mismatch of a four man who can play like a wing in transition and still post up and rebound like a big man in the paint as well. He’s skilled and plays with a good motor, he’s productive on both ends and he plays for a good and well coached program in Handley.

13) [player_tooltip player_id="1091484" first="Davian" last="Coleman"] | 6’8” | VBSA (#47 Overall)

Coleman’s older brother Jeriah was a late bloomer who ended up committing to St. Frances (PA) late in the recruitment process, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Davian had the same kind of track. The 6’8” big man is a blue collar kind of guy who does most of his damage within 10 feet, and he’s terrific at finding the ball on missed shots and getting easy put backs and second chance opportunities for his teammates. He can protect the rim and is athletic enough to play in transition, and he has tons that he can still improve on moving forward.

12) [player_tooltip player_id="957901" first="Tyler" last="Coleman"] | 6’6” | Paul VI (#44 Overall)

The honorable mention All Met selection last year and Towson commit doesn’t always get the shine and the headlines that the guards on his team have gotten over the past few years, but he’s the perfect style of big for their system and could be a versatile guy in the CAA. He’s a new school big who isn’t a bruiser in the post but instead a pop out guy who can make shots out to the three-point line and is a good passer, he runs the floor with his guards and he’s very low maintenance as he can be productive without a lot of plays being ran for him. He’s also a versatile defender who can switch on guards and wings when he needs to.

11) [player_tooltip player_id="798715" first="Tyrell" last="Harris"] | 6’6” | Potomac (#38 Overall)

Harris is a guy who has so much talent and so much potential at the same time, and if he were to decide to take a post-grad year if he doesn’t get anything it would likely be a very smart move. The 6’6” forward is definitely a guy who can play inside-out and is a walking mismatch with his blend of size, athleticism and skill set. He can rebound with bigs in the paint, he can take you out on the perimeter where he can make shots and handle the rock and he’s equally versatile defensively as he can guard multiple positions and still protect the rim too.

10) [player_tooltip player_id="1091482" first="Trenton" last="Picott"] | 6’7” | South County (#37 Overall)

Picott may not be the most skilled guy on this list, but he’s a super productive guy who doesn’t complain or try to do too much, he just goes out and competes and does his job. He’s grown to a legit 6’7” over the summer, he’s mobile and athletic enough to run the floor and he’s a big time rim protector who has good timing and is fearless when contesting shots. He has a ton of room to develop offensively but he still is great within 15 feet and is a strong finisher through traffic. He wasn’t the most well known guy on their state championship team last year but he was as important as anyone on the group.

9) [player_tooltip player_id="957893" first="Jack" last="Jensen"] | 6’8” | Paul VI (#35 Overall)

Jensen, whose brother plays at Army, emerged last year as one of the most consistent bigs for a very talented PVI team and ended up working his way into the starting lineup for the team that won the VISAA D1 State Championship. While he’s still a bit raw in certain areas, Jensen brings great size to the table as a presence in the post, he plays with good energy on both ends of the floor and he keeps things simple as he attacks the glass and catches and finishes on the offensive end. He’s a hard working and high academic kid who is just scratching the surface with how good he can be moving forward.

8) [player_tooltip player_id="543846" first="Oluwasegun" last="Durosinmi"] | 6’10” | VA Academy (#30 Overall)

“Duro,” as he’s known to teammates and friends alike, is a throwback style of big man that purists will like as he mans the paint and isn’t afraid to get physical in the paint. The 6’10” big man is a guy who can post up and bully guys in the paint, he’s always a threat to block shots on driving guards and he attacks the glass hard on both ends. He’s someone who still needs some work as he needs guys to create shots for him but he’s also capable of just burying guys deep in the post and using his strength to overpower them.

7) [player_tooltip player_id="697137" first="Caleb" last="Kenney"] | 6’6” | Douglas Freeman (#27 Overall)

Kenney has always shown potential at Freeman, but he’s come a long way and could be considered one of the most versatile guys on this list. The long and athletic lefty is capable of doing so much on the court as he can guard multiple positions, he’s a good shot blocker and rebounder, he can handle in transition and score it from multiple levels and even while he does all of this he’s a low maintenance and team first type of guy. A terrific student and person as well, Kenney has a blend of athleticism, length and skill set that makes him so hard to match up with, and he showed that during the CBG Fall Series where he picked up a number of offers, deciding to head north when he committed to Holy Cross of the Patriot League.

6) [player_tooltip player_id="798687" first="Avery" last="Ford"] | 6’7” | Centreville (#26 Overall)

A two sport star that was All State in both football and basketball, Ford plays on the hardwood like he does on the football field, rugged and physical. One of the best post defenders in the state, Ford is a terrific shot blocker with good timing but he’s also fundamental in guarding the post and is excellent in his rotations and ability to come help side on driving guards. He’s a blue collar guy who is athletic around the rim and rebounds on both ends, he can finish through contact and doesn’t shy away from it and he’s a guy who can step out and make shots out to 18 feet as well. Simply put, he isn’t going to wow you with flash or anything but he’s going to help you win games. He recently committed to ODU to play football.
