Valley Heights, which reached the 2A state quarterfinals a year ago, returns a ton of talent and has a great shot at repeating as league champs. Watch Clifton-Clyde and Frankfort, which both return a ton of talent. Frankfort also reached the state quarterfinals last season.
Isaac Detweiler and Jerrit Norris were freshmen who didn’t just contribute as rookies last year. They were top-flight performers who deserve to be watched closely as they grow up.
Preseason Co-Players of the Year:
Cameron Beardsley, senior, Valley Heights:
The top returning scorer in the league, Beardsley went for 14.9 points a game. The 6-foot-1 guard is an athletic and versatile leader who can score in bunches. He helped his team to the state quarterfinals and looks to go even deeper this year.
Emmitt Jueneman Emmitt Jueneman 6'1" | SF Hanover | 2022 State KS , junior, Hanover;
One of the top playmakers in the league, Jueneman earnd honorable mention 1A a year ago by scoring 14 points and tossing out 5 assists per contest.
Returning stars:
Drew Buhrman, senior, Washington County:
The 6-foot all-leaguer scored 12.9 points for the co-league champs a year ago.
Gavin Cornelison, senior, Frankfort:
Frankfort reached the 1A state quarterfinals, and returns several key pieces, including Cornelison, who averaged 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists as a junior.
Kobe Hoover, senior, Washington County:
Hoover was an all-league performer who was a versatile and reliable contributor.
Aiden Rudolph, senior, Clifton-Clyde:
The 6-foot-2 was accorded honorable mention in 1A as a junior. He scored 8.7 points a game and registered 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 steals per contest.
Players to watch:
Trent Beier, senior, Linn:
The 6-foot Beier is the second-best returning scorer in the league, having poured in 14.6 a year ago.
Isaac Detweiler, sophomore, Axtell:
The 5-foot-9 Detweiler had a big freshman season, averaging 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
Jeremiah Duncan, senior, BV-Randolph:
The 6-foot-4 senior will be one of the top bigs in the league. BV-Randolph was wiped out by graduation, so it will rely heavily on Duncan, who averaged 9 points and 5.6 boards last year.
Aiden Gerstner, senior, Frankfort:
The 6-foot-1 Gerstner aided Cornelison with 9.7 points per game.
Brayden Henry, senior, Wetmore:
The 5-foot-11 guard produced 14 points a game last season.
Blake Hynek, senior, Hanover:
The 6-foot-4 Hynek scored 12 points and pulled down 8 boards as a junior.
Wyatt Lange, senior, Clifton-Clyde:
The 6-foot-6 senior is probably the top big man in the league. He averaged 10.2 points and 5.8 boards a year ago.
Jerrit Norris, sophomore, Troy:
A stud to watch for this year, Norris was perhaps the league’s top freshman last year. The 6-foot-4 Norris recorded 11 points, 9.7 boards and 3 blocks per game in his rookie campaign.
Jackson O’Toole, senior, Valley Heights:
The 6-foot-1 returner was good for 9.3 points a game for the balanced and deep Mustangs.
