This Saturday I made the trip out to Oviedo High School for the Hoops With a Heart basketball tournament. I stayed for all of the games through 11 hours taking a few breaks here and there.

SG [player_tooltip player_id="812632" first="Eduardo" last="Placer"] 6-4 The Masters Academy 2023

With an older brother who starts at North Florida, Placer was born into a basketball family. On Saturday afternoon, the shooting guard represented his last name well torching the nets for a tournament high 41 points. Placer was at his best in the 3rd quarter scoring 17 of his points. With great size and the ability to score the ball from all 3 levels sophomore is certainly a player for college coaches to keep in mind as he already has an offer from UNF….. 6-0 PG [player_tooltip player_id="1055709" first="Zion" last="Mitchell"] (2024) showed promise as a freshmen scoring 11 points handling himself well against much older competition.

G [player_tooltip player_id="953084" first="Omarion" last="Brown"] 6-0 Lyman 2021

After having a solid summer playing with TNBA South on the AAU circuit Brown play has carried over into his senior season. At 6-0 tall he posses a quick first step that allows him to get by defenders and the explosiveness to finish at the rim. The guard has already made himself one poster this year, and on Saturday he impressed scoring the ball in a variety of ways ending the game with 30 points. Brown did everything in his power to bring home a win for Lyman scoring 17 points in the forth quarter but ultimately fell short.

G/F [player_tooltip player_id="953505" first="Almando" last="Cyrius"] 6-3 Vero Beach (2021), G David Cyrius 5-10 (2022)

In the game of the day a Vero Beach team led by Almando and David Cyrius came from behind to steal a victory from hometown Lake Highland Prep. Down most of the game Vero beach’s 6-3 senior Almando put in 12 of his 15 points in the second half. The slasher made several key baskets that changed the outcome of the game. The younger Cyrius did a majority of his damage scoring 13 of his 15 points in the 4th quarter including 3 timely three pointers.

G [player_tooltip player_id="814925" first="Jared" last="Berry"] 5-9 (Lake Highland Prep) 2022

The ultra quick point guard finished with a game high 19 points to go along with nine rebounds and 5 assists and 6 steals. This was the first game all season Long Berry finished with under 20 points.

Evans 79 Oviedo 54

PG [player_tooltip player_id="955607" first="Jyshaun" last="Melvin"] 5-9 (2022), PG Aviree Anderson 5-8 (2022)

After watching these two guards for the second time this season one thing is abundantly clear: they simply have no respect for anyone else’s ball handling abilities. Dribble a little too high, show the basketball even for a second and one of them is poking the ball away and headed down the court for a fast break. Melvin shot the ball at a high percentage sinking four 3-pointers on his way to 21 points with Anderson finishing with a game high 23. The two guards have clearly spent a lot of time playing basketball with each other as their chemistry on the court is a lot of fun to watch.

PG [player_tooltip player_id="1068748" first="Jacob" last="Rose"] 6-0 Oviedo (2021)

Rose got hot from beyond the three point line sinking 5 three pointers through out the game. Every time Rose would hit 3 and seemed like Oviedo was destined to make a run Evans would answer with fast break point or a 3-pointer of their own. In the toughest game of Oviedo’s season Rose finished the game with a team high 17 points. ….SG [player_tooltip player_id="1060199" first="Dawson" last="Barr"] 6-3 (2023) finished with 8 points and has the looks of a player who will lead the team when the seniors graduate for the next two seasons.
