Two of the better teams in Cypress, TX faced off on Saturday when the Cypress Creek Cougars hosted the Cypress Ranch Mustangs. Cy Creek is still awaiting the approval for 2021 Guard [player_tooltip player_id="1047728" first="Jaylen" last="Wysinger"] to begin playing, but they have not missed a beat in the early going of the season. 6’4 Guard DJ Richards has had a lot to do with their success, producing multiple 30+ point games this year. His production combined with the other talented, young guards that the Cougars have, has made them a tough team to beat. However, Cy Ranch has a young cast of talented guards as well. Lead by the steady play of 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="863924" first="Mason" last="Docks"], Cy Ranch has a team full of players that can actually play guard at the next level. Players like 6’4 [player_tooltip player_id="1052160" first="Dubem" last="Muoneke"] usually play the 4 or 5 position by default, but has the capability to dribble, pass and shoot, and has a solid guard skill set. So even without, Wysinger for Cy Creek and the duo of Franklin Sampson and Ryan Moore for Cy Ranch, this game shaped up to be a really good match up and a great litmus test for both teams as they head into district play.

The Cougars started the game turning the ball over more than they are accustomed to. However, Cy Ranch was unable to fully capitalize on the Cy Creek misfortunes. The Mustangs moved the ball relatively well and were able to create good looks, but was just unable to get many shots to fall in the early going. The beneficiary of the misses were Cy Ranch’s Bryson Scott, who was effective on the boards and had a few put backs. Eventually, Cy Ranch was able to string together some makes and began to stretch their lead. But, without question, the story of this quarter was the Cy Ranch defense, which held Cy Creek to only 6 points.

SECOND QUARTER

The second quarter saw two important players, one from both respective teams, have their playing time limited due to foul trouble. Both DJ Richards and [player_tooltip player_id="1052160" first="Dubem" last="Muoneke"] was forced to watch and cheer for their teammates as things unfolded. What they saw was Colby Rasberry and David Jamous pace the game offensively for the Cy Ranch Mustangs, each knocking down 3s. But the problem for Cy Ranch was, those two accounted for all 11 points for the Mustangs as Cy Creek began to mount a comeback. Jaylen Salsman had two 3-pointers for Cy Creek and eight total points in the quarter for the Cougars, bringing them within four points at the half way mark.

THIRD QUARTER

The third quarter was a game of runs, starting with an energetic Cy Ranch team. Their defense led to their offense, and their offense led to Colby Rasberry, as he began to find his rhythm. Colby accounted for ten of the Cy Ranch 16 points in the quarter, but Cy Creek never folded to the Cy Ranch effort. They were able to find balance within their offense with everyone getting an opportunity to chip in with the scoring load. Three players for Cy Creek scored two or more baskets as they continued to inch back closer and make this a nail biter by the end of the game.

FORTH QUARTER

The free throw line was key in the final period, as Cy Creek managed to not only bring the game within a single possession, but eventually take the lead. [player_tooltip player_id="1020906" first="Braylon" last="Haynes"], for Cy Creek, was instrumental in his team obtaining the lead. He was able to get into the teeth of the defense and make plays for himself and others. Corey Hadnot piggy backed off of Braylon’s assertiveness by finding ways to get himself some good looks, and even when good looks were not available, he was able to make tough shots. Down the stretch, Cy Creek was able to make all of their free throws (DJ Richards made 4 of the Cy Creek 9) and that ended up being enough for them to complete their comeback and win a tough game.
