Over the past year, Nickel has been made known on a national level and is starting to see his recruitment take off. Nickel has been one of the top performers in the Commonwealth Basketball Grassroots Fall Series and I was able to catch up with him this past weekend to talk about a variety of things. We started off by talking about how this fall has been given the current state we are in because of the pandemic.
“It has actually been a lot better than expected. I did not think we were going to get a lot of opportunities to play but we are playing a lot so I am pretty happy about how things turned out given the circumstances.”
Our lead Virginia scout Jack Herron has put together a terrific event in the Commonwealth Basketball Grassroots Fall Series and Tyler talked about what he is trying to get out of the event.
“Basically just widen my recruitment and get as much good competition as you can but just trying to get better, get up and down as much as you can and go up against a good amount of guys that can prepare you well for the next level and this has given us an opportunity to do that.”
In terms of recruitment, many power fives are taking notice and he talked about where things stand in his recruitment with us.
“It has been going pretty well. A lot of coaches like to see you in person and I know a lot of traditional coaches need to see you in person before they make any legitimate moves so that has been a little harder obviously because of everything going on with the virus. But overall the recruitment process has been going good, pretty consistent.”
We asked him which schools he thinks are prioritizing him and he mentioned Virginia Tech, NC State, LSU and Wake Forest and he was able to break down those first three for us.
Virginia Tech: “They have a really good staff. Those are solid guys that are part of that program. They are really stand up people. I really like how their system is so I like the program a lot and I like the direction the program is headed in.”
NC State: “Another program that is filled with standup guys. They don’t allow any nonsense in that program and just go straight to the point. They are really good people and they care about you as a person. I have nothing to complain about with them.”
LSU: “The way their program and system is set up, I love the offensive scheme they have. The way they utilize big guards is something that is very very important to me. They are good guys and I feel like their system will benefit me.”
