Continue ReadingThe Commonwealth Basketball Group held their second session of their Fall Series at Guardian Christian Academy in Chesterfield, VA. The goal of the event was to get kids back in the gym in a grassroots setting, and provide a live steam to college coaches to be able to evaluate the talent in a structured environment.
The event had 16 teams and was loaded with talent, so doing the standouts in just one article simply isn’t possible. Here’s a look at part one of the 2023-2024 standouts, featuring six guys to keep an eye on.
Curtis Blair | 6’5” WF | Rockett 2023
Blair got off to a lightning fast start in session two until an unfortunate migraine slowed him down toward the end of the first game and limited him in the second game. However, he still shows why he’s so promising, and one of the biggest reasons is how he’s improved both his body and his game over the past few years. He’s stronger and more physical, he’s more explosive and willing to play around the rim and he’s improved as a shot creator that has added to his game offensively.
Dennis Parker Dennis Parker 6'6" | SF John Marshall | 2023 State #89 Nation VA Jr. | 6’6” WF | CBG Blue Magic 2023
Parker continues to look stellar and a very promising prospect through the second session of the CBG Fall Series, and he played really well against a 434 team with a number of talented young prospects as well. Parker’s versatility and skill set at his size is what makes him impressive to watch, as he can play and guard the positions 1-4 at the high school level which will make him very impactful when he goes to the next level on the wing. He can handle and pass, he can make shots and he can rebound like a big as well.
John St. Germain John St. Germain 6'2" | PG St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’0” PG | CBG 434 2023
St. Germain showed during the first session that he was probably the top point guard in VA in his class, and he showed this second session he can hang with the best as he had some tough matchups and still showed out. He’s a kid who doesn’t rattle, he has the right counter to everything, he plays with great pace and he knows how to get to his spots and make shots or make plays for others. He’s going to be a guy who blows up at some point, it’s just waiting for the right schools to see him at the right time.
Carter Lang Carter Lang 6'9" | C St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State #199 Nation VA | 6’9” C | CBG 434 2023
Lang is another young prospect who continues to impress with 434 as he once again battled and was productive throughout the day. He’s a walking double-double for the next three years as he’s big enough, plays hard enough and understand the game enough to be productive without needing a lot of stuff run for him. He has touch out to 18 feet, he attacks the glass and pursues the ball well and if he continues to get more mobile and grow into his body we’ll have a serious issue on our hands.
Logan Rhoades Logan Rhoades 6'2" | CG Mills Godwin | 2023 State VA | 6’1” WG | VA Havoc 2023
Rhoades, whose father Mike is the head coach at VCU, was a new addition to this Havoc team this session and while it took him a little while to get acclimated with his team he showed flashes of how good he can be moving forward. He’s a savvy and high IQ kid who can really stroke it from deep, has good wiggle off the bounce and is a crafty finisher that finds his way tot he line often for easy points. He’s one of the guys I fully believe will be a breakout player this season at Mills Godwin.
Leland Coleman | 6’4” WF | Team Assists 2.0 2023
Coleman, whose older brother Henry was a star at Trinity Episcopal and is now a freshman at Duke, is starting to blossom into a good player of his own right too. He’s sprouted to about 6’4” and looks like he’s still growing with his long arms, he plays with a good motor and he really shined on the defensive end with his ability to guard multiple positions. He’s a guy who has waited his turn and continued to work, and things are about to take off for him this season at TES.
