Continue ReadingThe Commonwealth Basketball Group held their first session of their Fall Series at Guardian Christian Academy in Chesterfield, VA. The goal of the event was to get kids back in the gym in a grassroots setting, and provide a live steam to college coaches to be able to evaluate the talent in a structured environment.
The event had 12 teams and was loaded with talent, so doing the standouts in just one article simply isn’t possible. Here’s a look at part two of the 2021 standouts, featuring seven guys to keep an eye on.
Allen Strothers Allen Strothers 6'2" | PG Menchville | 2021 State VA | 6’2” PG | Hard 2 Guard 2021
Possibly the best passing point guard in the event, Strothers made everyone around him better and had some very flashy and impressive passes throughout the event. Strothers’ length and athleticism is the first thing you notice when you watch him play, but his ability to get in the paint and draw the defense and see the floor doesn’t take long to notice either. The pure point averaged 6 assists to just one turnover per game and made an impact on both ends of the floor. He picked up an offer from Troy University after his performance.
Marcus Nesmith | 6’4” WG | Hard 2 Guard 2021
When it comes to shooters in the building, Nesmith showed he was one of the best in the event and proved why he’s been underrated in the past by many, including myself. At 6’4” he has great size on the wing, he moves well without the ball and sets his feet quickly and he can flat out stroke it with deep range. He’s also an underrated athlete and shot 7-for-13 from deep in two games.
Jayson Harris Jayson Harris 6'6" | PF Menchville | 2021 State VA | 6’7” PF | Hard 2 Guard 2021
Another underrated guy for Hard 2 Guard that deserves scholarship attention, Harris was a force in the paint as he held his own against guys bigger than him and was an impact on both ends of the floor. He’s somewhat of a throwback that can score over both shoulders, is in the right place at the right time and has soft touch and dominates the glass. He averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds over the two games, and had a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds in their final game against Blue Magic.
Jason Nelson Jason Nelson 5'8" | PG John Marshall | 2021 State VA | 5’10” PG | CBG Blue Magic 2021
I have probably seen Nelson more than anyone that hasn’t coached him over the past three years, but I still get blown away at how competitive and tough the kid is. He’s improved immensely over the years and has turned himself into a complete PG that can score it, make others better and set the tone, and no matter who he’s matched up with he goes smack at them and always plays at a high level. In their win over Hard 2 Guard, the Richmond commit finished with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field, and pitched in 4 assists without turning the ball over once.
Dana Woodley Dana Woodley 6'4" | SG John Marshall | 2021 State VA | 6’4” WG | CBG Blue Magic 2021
Woodley is a guy who sometimes gets overlooked because of some of the other talent on his teams, however he’s a very intriguing prospect with his blend of size, athleticism and skill on the wing. The 6’4” wing is a guy who plays way above the rim on both ends, he can make shots from deep when he’s set and he has great body control and finishing ability through traffic when he gets downhill.
Roosevelt Wheeler Roosevelt Wheeler 6'9" | C John Marshall | 2021 State #62 Nation VA | 6’10” C | CBG Blue Magic 2021
Wheeler looked every bit like the top available big in the class of 2021 with his production and impact on both ends of the floor. The 6’10” big is a traditional big in the fact that he can post guys up and hit the jump hook with consistency, but he’s also the rim runner and rim protector style of big that many schools are looking for now. He gets up and down the floor well, his impact in the paint is something you can’t question and he’s a guy who dominate the glass and start the break with outlet passes as well.
Ty Lacey | 6’4” WF | CBG Blue Magic 2021
Lacey is another guy who gets overlooked at times because of the talent around him, but if I’m a small school I would look very closely at him. At 6’4”, Lacey has good size on the wing, he’s skilled in the fact that he can shoot it and attack closeouts and he plays with good pace and understanding of the game. He showed offensively he has some skills we didn’t know about but the biggest positive he brings is in the impact he can make without having the ball in his hands as a defender, hustle guy and a flat out winner.
