Although COVID has put a wrench in a lot of people’s plans this summer, it did nothing to derail the efforts of Houston area players to get exposure. Over the past several months there has been a ton of events in which young players could put their talent on display. Events like OTR’s "Separation Camp", RCS Sports "Rucker On Wood" and Texas Boy’s Basketball’s mini camps, provided a much needed platform for players to be able to compete and keep their games sharp. After attending several of these events, it’s apparent, the class of 2023 seems primed to let their presence be known on the Houston scene. Here’s a look at a few of them.

[player_tooltip player_id="787342" first="Chris" last="Johnson"]

6’4 Combo G | Elkins HS | 2023

Chris can do it all. He is able to make deep shots or finish strongly at the rim. I am most impressed with his ability to make plays for others though. He has excellent vision and the size to look over defenders to make on-target passes. In a perfect world, he would play PG, but at this level, his size, ability to defend other scorers and his athleticism has him playing more of a wing.

[player_tooltip player_id="787339" first="Orlando" last="Horton"]

[embed]https://youtu.be/AoH-fU3XxdU[/embed]

5’8 PG | Clear Falls HS | 2023

Orlando can really score the ball on all levels. A quick, fast and shifty point guard that can get any shot that he wants and make it regardless of the defender. He has limitless range and can manipulate his body to finish in traffic. In addition, he does a good job of running his team and making sure that everyone is involved. He understands angles and plays with pace. Defensively, he can defend the position and gets into the ball handler often creating turnovers.

Gary Rebolledo

6’4 F/G | Legacy School of Sports Science HS | 2023

Gary is an extremely smart player that makes his money in the mid range. Yes, he is capable of banging down low, but that is often overlooked by his consistent efficiency from the mid range area. He is able to make plays, he sees the court well and can defend nearly every player on the floor. His ability to be a big "extra PG" is definitely an asset to whatever team he plays with.

Kam Burton

6’3 G | Legacy School of Sports Science HS | 2023

Kam has great size and a high IQ of the game. He is a three level scoring guard that can ACTUALLY POST UP effectively. When the match ups presents themselves he can flat out take his defender to "the wood shed." But still, he is efficient from the perimeter and his size and length allows him to be effective on defense.

[player_tooltip player_id="892166" first="Jaydon" last="Nunn"]

[embed]https://youtu.be/IIuOxAQSXbQ[/embed]

6’0 PG | Cy Springs HS 2023

Jaydon is a crafty point guard who can get to where ever he wants on the floor. This is beneficial to him as well as his teammates, as he is a willing passer. He is a feisty defender who has active hands and good lateral movement, and his competitiveness only adds to his energy on the side of the floor. The last time I saw him, he was dunking the ball with relative ease which makes him even more attractive as a prospect.

[player_tooltip player_id="787322" first="Jaylen" last="Benard"]

[embed]https://youtu.be/9mLDVnrBIkY[/embed]

6’1 G | Cy Ranch HS | 2023

The thing that makes Jaylen stick out more than everything else (imo) is his defense. His effort and willingness to do whatever it takes to stop a defender is great. He can guard positions 1 - 3 and occasionally a big. And he is great at turning his defense into offense, not only for himself but also, for others. But yes in deed, he can score the ball too.

[player_tooltip player_id="960672" first="Chandler" last="Williams"]

6’5 F | Klein Forest HS | 2023

Chandler is a man child down low. He is extremely strong and active on the inside, allowing him to be productive on the boards and on defense. He possesses a soft touch, so even in traffic, he is able to make difficult, contested shots. Athletically, he protects the rim, runs the floor and can finish at the rim when needed.

[player_tooltip player_id="787367" first="Wesley" last="Yates"]

[embed]https://youtu.be/Uz7HwuEilH4[/embed]

6’3 Combo G | Beaumont United HS | 2023

Offensively, there is nothing that Wesley can not do. He can score off the dribble, score off a screen and he has tremendous range. Athletically, he can finish through traffic and put defenders in the rim. He has a tight handle with the ball in his hands and it allows him to be able to create good looks for himself. Defensively, his length and size makes him pretty solid on the perimeter.

[player_tooltip player_id="787356" first="Trealyn" last="Porchia"]

[embed]https://youtu.be/-MF4qeK1HW4[/embed]

6’5 F/G | Beaumont United HS | 2023

Trealyn is a physical specimen, particularly for his age. He is strong and physical in the paint and because of his size and athleticism, he can guard multiple positions effectively. When he is playing downhill, it is nearly impossible from stopping him from getting to the rim. He seems to be getting more comfortable from the mid range area and as he continues to expand his game, he is definitely a prospect to watch.
