Continue ReadingEKM was under the radar for a large chunk of last season, and ultimately ended up winning 20 games including a Region 3 championship for the first time in years. The Rebels are graduating several key seniors, but return a strong core led by an all-state forward. Is EKM the favorite in what should be a strong Region 3?
Go-To Guy: Alex Huber Alex Huber 6'6" | SF Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier | 2021 State ND
Huber blossomed into a force as a junior, averaging nearly 20 points and seven rebounds per game. At 6-foot-6, he’s a matchup nightmare for opposing teams because he’s active and athletic inside and a terrific finisher at the rim, but also mobile and skilled enough to abuse bigger, slower guys. He’ll be heavily featured offensively as a senior, and he’s got all-state potential.
Breakout Candidate: Dalton Madcke
Madcke had his share of good moments as a sophomore off the bench, showing a slashing and playmaking ability that the Rebels will need next season. He’s quick and athletic, and his ability to contribute and impact the game in a variety of ways makes him a potentially very important player.
Question: Can EKM’s Defense Stay Strong?
The Rebels won 20 games last year in large part because they were among the elite defensive teams in the state. They allowed just 48 points per game and routinely held good teams well below their season averages. A solid chunk of that core is set to return, but the Rebels are losing a number of valuable perimeter pieces, who played big parts in keying that defensive effectiveness. With guys like Huber, Jorgen Paulson, Chayse Entzi and Madcke all around, the Rebels have the pieces to field a strong defensive outfit.
Season Outlook
EKM should go into next season feeling good about contending in Region 3. While it is shaping up to be very strong with Oakes, Ellendale, Strasburg/Zeeland, Kidder County and Linton/HMB should all be competitive, EKM has an elite talent in Huber along with promising complementary talent in Paulson, Entzi and others. They could be a top-10 team in Class B heading into the year.
