Through each edition, we have unlocked new names that should make an impression on next year’s prep scene. This volume will look at another group of young men that should be players to watch in the season to come.
Caldwell Parish
Chavell Butler | 5’7″ | Caldwell Parish – The Caldwell Parish Spartans were a senior-laden team who ended up winning eleven games last sesason. Moving into next season, they will have lean on the leadership at the guard spot in Chavell Butler. Butler plays on and off the ball and loves to shoot the three ball. His ability to shoot from distance will open up the floor for his teammates to drive to the basket. Look for Butler to have a very good year.
Iberia Parish
Jaterrius Fusilier | 6’1″ | New Iberia Senior High – Two way players seem to grow on trees in the southern section of the state. New Iberia has a really good one in Jaterrius Fusilier. He is a very good defender in perimeter, man-to-man situations and can come up with steals more times than not. On the offensive end, Fusilier can score on all three levels regularly shooting well from distance. I see Fusilier being a great leader for NISH this coming season.
St. Martin Parish
Avontez Ledet Avontez Ledet 6'3" | CG Cecilia | 2021 State LA | 6’3″ | Cecilia – Ledet may be on the stars of the 2021 class when this season is said and done. Last year, he was the driving force in Cecilia’s run to the 4A quarterfinals and almost single-handedly propelled Cecilia past Woodlawn-Shreveport. On the offensive end, the all-district first teamer is a scoring machine. Inside or out, he can get it done. Ledet will definitely be an all-district performer and I think all-state is a definite as well.
St. Helena Parish
Jency Riley | 6’6″ | St.Helena Academy – Riley is a two-sport athlete who plays post on the basketball team and tight end on the football team. While he may have a future on the next level in football, I can see him carving a niche for himself in basketball. Riley is a shotblocker who has good hands around the basket. Because of his brute strength, finishing through contact is not an issue. Look for Riley to have a good senior season for St. Helena.
St. Mary’s Parish
J’Michael Gray | 5’11″ | Franklin – The 7-2A district MVP and all-state honorable mention is a guard that gives you everything he has when he plays. He is a disruptor on defense and causes major issues for anyone he is guarding. When he is on the offense, he can carve up a defense with his array of floaters, straight line drives, and three point shots. For a small guard, he does not mind rebounding either. He is tough as nails and has two more years.
Catahoula Parish
Dexture Jefferson | 6’3″ | Block – Jefferson is the Block quarterback and does everything he can for the offense to be successful. He pretty much does the same for the Block basketball team. Jefferson plays all five positions during the course of a game and leaves his imprint. He can rebound on both ends, score around the basket, and run the floor. Block made it to the regional round last year in 1A. Look for Jefferson to lead them further this year.
Louisiana has a variety of players with different skill sets in each parish. Just in this article, there are two-way players to two-sport players. Look for the player variety to expand as we make our way to naming the best player in all 64 parishes.
