The PrepHoops Rumble Up North wrapped up on Sunday in Minnesota. The event is loaded with national teams and D1 prospects including tons of Illinois teams. We dive into them here in Rumble Up North: Scotty B’s Sunday Notebook!

Illinois T-Wolves 17U Frontline Controls Sunday Morning Win

The Illinois T-Wolves 17U started off Sunday with a big win over Evolution Basketball. It was predicated with their inside game early on. Lincoln Way Central 2021 power forward James Ogrodnik continued his strong summer. The athletic face up four man ran the floor hard and was rewarded on multiple occasions. Also was bouncy in the paint for second chance points. Joliet West 2021 four man Ashawn Burbridge is a high energy undersized four man that is so active. He crashes the glass for junk points. Also showed some more perimeter skills slashing for a bucket and hitting a mid-range jumper. Good defender both inside with his quickness and on the perimeter. Top prospect Joliet West 2021 shooting guard Jaiden Lee bombed in a pair of threes and the wiry wing also got loose in transition for a slick score. Joliet West 2021 6’3” wing [player_tooltip player_id="771636" first="Andrew" last="Johnson"] did most of his damage in the post during this game. Right handed hook shot, runner, and another bucket in the paint.

[player_tooltip player_id="925199" first="Jamil" last="Wilson"] Leads Way for R.I.S.E. 16U

De La Salle 2022 power forward [player_tooltip player_id="925199" first="Jamil" last="Wilson"] had a monster weekend. The long and lanky 6’7” four man was so quick to the offensive glass. He had four put backs in the first half alone. Explosive finishing around the hoop. Rim protecting presence on the defensive end. His stock is most definitely on the rise! His high school teammate at De La Salle 2022 point guard Dajuan Bates is a wiry point guard that is a tenacious defender and uses his speed offensively getting to the rim. St. Ignatius 2022 power forward Kolby Gilles is a strong bodied post that has some mobility to go with his power game. St. Ignatius slender shooting guard [player_tooltip player_id="863613" first="AJ" last="Redd"] flashed his offensive upside with his mid-range game, up and unders, and scoring in transition.

Tavari Johnson Answers Questions for Young & Reckless 16U

We came away extremely impressed with Lyons 2022 point guard Tavari Johnson yesterday. He ran the show, worked well in ball screens, dished the rock, and used his speed. The last remaining question was his shot as we didn’t see him knock down any in a pair of games yesterday. You can check that off after today. Johnson drilled back to back pull up threes. Also mixed in a mid-range jumper in the first half. The ball screen savant has really elevated his stock with a strong weekend. Fenwick forward Gabe Madej picked up right where he left off yesterday with his spot up shooting. Drilled several threes, rebounded well, and threw strong outlets. Hyde Park 2022 wing Malik Jenkins is a strong bodied wing that scores with creativity in the paint.

Hoopstars Central 16U Falls Despite Strong Wing Showing

Former Kankakee and now Bishop Gorman (NV) wing AJ Storr recently reclassified to the 2022 class so he played Sunday with the Hoopstars 16U squad. The strong and athletic small forward displayed his ability to score in bunches with deep threes and creative drives off the bounce finishing through contact. Bloomington 2022 small forward Famious French is a prospect we are very intrigued by. He has a smooth looking shot and the slender wing slithers through the defense on drives. Despite their efforts the Hoopstars fell to Wisconsin Playground 70-48.

[player_tooltip player_id="821777" first="Isaiah" last="Holden"] & [player_tooltip player_id="920961" first="Noah" last="Reynolds"] Put on Show in 17U Title in Close Loss to D1 Minnesota

The Illinois Hoopstars led for a major part of the 17U championship game including going into the last minute. Highly ranked David Joplin took over late with a bucket and clinched it at the line for D1 Minnesota to take home the win 61-57.

For the Hoopstars it was all about Evanston 2021 point guard Isaiah Holden and Peoria Notre Dame’s [player_tooltip player_id="920961" first="Noah" last="Reynolds"] in this one. The dynamic lead guards did whatever they wanted. Consistently won off the dribble against D1 defenders. Converted spinning layups and other acrobatic takes. Also got to the foul line at a high rate. Both have good pull up games. Khailieo Terry from Champaign Central had a nice outing using his energy inside scoring on junk points and crashing the glass. Springfield Southeast 2021 shooting guard [player_tooltip player_id="920943" first="James" last="Dent"] drilled a pair of smooth threes early on in the game. Put it on the deck a little too as the game went on.

[player_tooltip player_id="821789" first="AJ" last="Storr"] with Strong Outing for Hoopstars Willis

It doesn’t matter if he is playing 16U or 17U Bishop Gorman (NV) 2022 small forward [player_tooltip player_id="821789" first="AJ" last="Storr"] just gets buckets. Did it playing for Illinois Hoopstars 17U Willis by drilling contested threes, getting out in transition off his defense, and using his strength. If he would have stayed at Kankakee and in the 2021 class he would have been one of the biggest stock risers probably moving inside the top 25 overall.

[player_tooltip player_id="863630" first="Ethan" last="Ivan"] Shines for HIT 16U

Batavia 2022 power forward [player_tooltip player_id="863630" first="Ethan" last="Ivan"] was excellent in the early going for HIT 16U in their final game of the event. The skilled face up four man did a little bit of everything showcasing his versatility. Ran the floor hard and was rewarded with several buckets by his guards. Put it on the deck including a slick euro step. Recorded a couple steals and a block. Also stretched the floor hitting a three. The 6’6” rising junior is one to track heading into the high school season.

Young & Reckless Loses in 16U Title to Wisconsin Playground

Y&R led at the half, but the hot outside shooting from Playground was too much to overcome as they took home the 16U crown. Jack Rose was unconscious from three for portions of the game particularly the first several minutes of the second half finishing with 21 points including 5 triples. Lyons 2022 point guard Tavari Johnson left no doubt he is one of the best lead guards in the rising junior class with his play over the weekend. Has the ball on a string whether it is getting to the rack, playing off ball screens, or setting up others. Did a nice job of that finding his array of wings in this one. [player_tooltip player_id="863601" first="Gabe" last="Madej"], Malik Jenkins, and Vijay Wallace all of which hit threes in the second half. Johnson ended up with 18 points on 8-10 from the field.
