The Minnesota Academy junior to be has worked hard this off-season to reshape himself and the hard work is paying off.
“The day that they told us that the basketball season was cancelled and that we weren’t going back to school in person, my father and I had a sit down,” Chase said. “We talked about our goals coming up for me. We discussed some of the struggles and the down parts of the basketball year.
“He said if I don’t want want to come back like this (referring to how the 2019-20 season went on the basketball court) we have a lot of stuff to work on. My father, my brothers, and I just talked and the biggest thing was to start focussing on my body.
“Over the four months of quarantine I have been trying to catch up to some guys. I am trying to build my body up, and I still have a long way to go, but I feel like I am working hard to get a little bit better every day. I have lost weight as I continue to work out properly and work out hard. Doing all the small things like stretching and things like that so I can get better.”
As both a high major basketball and high major football prospect, Carter has been fortunate to have opportunities that many others do not have. He has football offers from Nebraska and Iowa State, and basketball offers from Florida, Minnesota, Vanderbilt, and West Virginia.
That said, there is the challenge of working out in a football way, and in a basketball way. The good thing is that at Chase’s size, it fits both the forward spot on a basketball court and a few different positions in football.
“I would say that I am blessed at my position of defensive end,” Carter said. “I feel like the abilities translate. I have with my dad about this as part of the reason I move well on the football field is because of basketball. The footwork that you use to score both in the post and on the wing, I would say that translates on the football field because a lot of those bigger but slower guys, it’s hard for them to get that first step.”
On the basketball court Chase is excited for a bigger role with the Redhawks next winter.
“For me this year will be about asserting myself,” Chase said. “I have had the tendency – in the past year – to be a passive player. Even though I play with a lot of great players like Chet, Prince, Hercy, and others, there is no way I want to go out there and be the weak link on the court. Players will have to respect me. I’m building confidence and playing within myself.
“One thing I pride myself on is when people ask me what I do well on the court. To me it’s what can’t I do on the court. I feel like I could be a player that can fill up every stat. I want to score on the block, I want to get that steal, I want to create a couple assists, I want to rebound, I want to score. To me it’s bringing a lot of pieces in to help the team. I know guys on our team are going to get their points. But can I be the guy that gets those ten rebounds? I want to be that guy. And if somebody isn’t scoring I need to go out and get 15 points.
“To me it’s about bringing a lot, being a total package.”
Basketball wise he is hearing from one school more than others.
Carter has five scholarship offers: Minnesota, West Virginia, Hampton, Florida, and Vanderbilt.
“I talk to West Virginia a lot,” Carter stated. “They have been prioritizing me. I have also talked to Minnesota, Florida, Iowa, Purdue twice, Santa Clara a couple times, I talk to St. Thomas a lot, and then South Dakota.”
