Here’s a look at some of the top Kansas posts in the 16U Division of the Midwest Grind Session (in alphabetical order and with club and high school listed):
Fred Criqui, SSA Black, St. Marys:
The 6-foot-7 Criqui should be a player to watch on the talented St. Marys team. He’s athletic and solidly built for his height. He moves well all over the floor and has good hands. Criqui is able to drive with the ball or flash to the open area. He’s equally active on defense with his hands in passing lanes or altering shots.
Samuel Gros, SSA White, Frankfort:
A small-school player, Gros is a little undersized on the summer circuit. The 6-foot-3 rising junior moves well without the ball and makes good power moves in the post. He fights in traffic on both offense and defense and is a rugged rebounder.
Noah Hastert, SSA Black, Cair Paravel:
Hastert is an ultra-fundamental player who isn’t flashy, but does everything right. He can shoot hooks with either hand in the lane. He’s smart with his moves in the lane, finding openings to score or kick to open teammates. The 6-foot-6 Hastert doesn’t have a lot of bulk, but he fights for rebounds and hustles. He is selfless and does what his team needs to win.
Keon Hula, SSA White, Council Grove:
Hula is a 6-foot-4 wide body who moves surprisingly well for his size. He is active in the lane, catching and scoring or dropping off passes. He has great hands and is a really good passer. You won’t move him in the post, and he works hard. He earned honorable mention 3A as a sophomore.
Jace Linenberger, Midwest Magic, Hays:
At 6-foot-7, Linenberger is a disruptive force in the middle of the defense. He moves well and has active hands and fights hard for rebounds. He has a very solid build and is a tough customer in the lane. He moves well for his size.
Henry Thengvall, Mid Kansas, Kapaun:
One of the more agile bigs at the tournament, the 6-foot-5 Thengvall can handle the ball well, drive to the hole from the perimeter and shoot from beyond the arc. But he’s not soft in the lane. He is a powerful rebounder, who can follow up misses with tough buckets in the paint.
Keaton Williams, Perry Ellis 34, Kapaun:
One of the tallest posts at the Midwest Grind Session, Williams is a smooth, gliding athlete for someone 6-foot-8. He uses his height like a traditional post, blocking shots and scoring in the post. He is a willing screener at the top of the lane and is an effective passer to facilitate the offense. He flashes through the lane to give teammates a target, and he scores on putbacks. He shows good hustle and positive attitude.
