Back in April, as it became more and more bleak for Southern California basketball players to get back in the gym to improve and be evaluated, I began an initiative to help players improve their games virtually.

The gist of the program was this: I offered to review a prospect’s full game film and provide a detailed scouting report on that player’s strengths and weaknesses, along with some workout tools developed by a friend and trainer.

The idea quickly took off and as my email inbox filled with submissions from across the country, I thought it would be great to highlight some of those players on the Prep Hoops platform, as well. So, here are a handful of 2021 prospects I reviewed over the last few months.

[player_tooltip player_id="951232" first="Andrew" last="Cook"], Servite - Cook is an old-school type scorer who really thrives at the mid-range level. He has impressive footwork at the 13-17 foot range, stops and rises up for shots on a dime, and has the ability to use the glass when the angle allows him to. The 6-foot-2 guard is also a crafty finisher around the basket when he’s able to beat his defender off the dribble.

[player_tooltip player_id="951265" first="Max" last="Bowman"], JSerra - Bowman is one of the better pure shooters in the Orange County area. He has very good balance in his base, fluid upper-body mechanics and his follow through and release points are what would be taught in a textbook on how to shoot a basketball. Bowman is also a pretty underrated on-ball defender. He has quick hands, moves well laterally and does a nice job of speeding up his assignment.

[player_tooltip player_id="959911" first="Owen" last="Hill"], Bishop’s - Hill is another big time shooter in SoCal’s 2021 class. The 6-foot-3 wing won one of our Prep Hoops Circuit three-point shooting contests in the summer of 2019 and obviously carried that success over into the high school season. Hill is a guy who spreads the floor from multiple spots from behind the arc and is a very heady and smart team defender who is willing to step over and take a charge.

[player_tooltip player_id="951234" first="Nathan" last="Clark"], Pacifica Christian/SM - Clark continues to fly under-the-radar in SoCal’s 2021 class and we’re not too sure why. The lanky 6-foot-2 point guard plays with really nice pace in transition and half-court settings and understands how to use the high ball screen to get himself or a teammate an open shot. Clark is best when getting to the rim and using his length and craftiness to finish around shot blockers in the paint.
