Class of 2021 Potential Breakout Players Pt. 3

It’s been a different summer so far to say the least in the world of high school basketball. Grassroots events have largely gotten underway in some parts of the country while others are still on hold. A lot of players have been missing out on a time when they’d usually have ample opportunities to showcase their game for college coaches.

With events still pretty much on hold here in California, I’ve used the time to watch film on players that I haven’t quite watched in depth before. Here’s a group of players from the Class of 2021 that I’ve seen through film that could be players to look out for this upcoming season. I’ll have more groupings of players throughout this month.

1. Cristian Butler – Dominguez

Butler is a solid lead guard who should have a very strong year as one of the team leaders. He is strong when making a move to the rim; handles the ball well and can finish in the paint over the defense. Absorbs contact. Keeps the ball moving on offense and looks for his teammates. Good defensive player both on and off ball. Gets up in offensive player’s face. Solid in transition.

2. [player_tooltip player_id="747109" first="Tyson" last="Robinson"] – El Camino

Robinson is another strong guard. He has a strong midrange game and likes to operate in the mid-post area. He has a nice pull-up jumper off the dribble. Can absorb contact and finish strong at the rim. Shoots the ball well from distance and he has a quick release. Step-back game is solid as well. Very quick on the fast break.

3. [player_tooltip player_id="680233" first="Brandon" last="Richard"] – Windward

Richard brings a lot of toughness and size to the Wildcats frontcourt. He’s a strong rebounder who puts himself in position for offensive put-backs. Keeps the ball high when in the post and is decisive around the rim. He moves very well without the ball and snakes in for rebounds or makes hard cuts along the baseline. Hard worker in the paint.

4. [player_tooltip player_id="680243" first="Alex" last="Archer"] – Cerritos

Archer is a solid point guard who pushes the pace well, especially in transition. He’s very quick and a blur for the defense to try and slow down. He has great court awareness and vision and makes the right decisions. Knows how to read the defense and decide whether to make a play for himself or make a pass to a teammate. Good shooter from midrange and from the three-point line.

5. [player_tooltip player_id="951233" first="Jalen" last="Cole"] – La Mirada

Cole is a solid wing with good size. He can alternate between both forward positions; he plays on the perimeter, but can also play up in small ball lineups and his ability to stretch the floor. His versatility shows on the defensive end as well. He can cover wings and contest jumpers as well as manning the paint and blocking shots. A good rebounder who boxes out well.
