The 2022 class in New Jersey took a hit when Zion Cruz left for Oak Hill Academy, but it is still a deep class. The guard position is filled with high level talent with three members being a member of the All-State team last season. The wings are also talented and they have a strong opportunity to break onto the scene next season. Here are the top 2022 breakout wing candidates.

[player_tooltip player_id="901974" first="Donovan" last="Long"], 6’6 SF Rutgers Prep

Long helped Marist get to the Hudson County Tournament final for the second straight year and should help the Argonauts in 2020-21. The lanky 6’6 forward attacks the basket hard and is unafraid of taking contact around the basket. Long’s motor never stops on both ends of the floor and plays solid post defense. He has a nice release on his shot and has a good mid-range game. Long takes over [player_tooltip player_id="850340" first="Nico" last="Galette"]’s role for Rutgers Prep and is ready to have a breakout year for one of New Jersey’s top teams.

[player_tooltip player_id="901979" first="Nate" last="Williams"], 6’2 SG St. John Vianney

The Lancers won a game in both the Shore Conference and Non-Public A South Tournaments, but they need to replace Brian Stuart and Alex Leiba. Williams is the team’s top returning scorer and is ready for a bigger role on the offensive end. The 6’2 guard knows how to beat his man off the dribble and finish around the basket. Williams has a nice shooting touch and his range extends past the three-point line. St. John Vianney is capable of eclipsing the 20-win mark in 2020-21 with Williams getting more touches on the offensive end.

[player_tooltip player_id="931027" first="Alex" last="Bauman"], 6’4 SF Red Bank Catholic

The Caseys made the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals, but they need to replace [player_tooltip player_id="896621" first="Charlie" last="Gordinier"] and [player_tooltip player_id="896654" first="Kevin" last="Bauman"]. The younger Bauman had a good sophomore campaign and is ready for a larger role in the offense. The 6’4 forward has a good handle and knows how to finish around the basket. Bauman is a good passer and is a solid on-ball defender. Red Bank Catholic returns a solid core of players with Bauman leading the way in 2020-21.

[player_tooltip player_id="1013422" first="Tyler" last="Bey"], 6’6 SF St. Benedict’s

Bey had a solid sophomore season at Delsea and transferred to St. Benedict’s in the offseason. The lanky 6’6 forward is a big-time athlete who likes to finish above the rim. Bey has a nice handle and knows how to play on the perimeter. He is a good rebounder and uses his athleticism to make plays on the defensive end. The Grey Bees should be one of the top teams in New Jersey again next season, which provides Bey an opportunity to break out.

[player_tooltip player_id="931021" first="Darren" last="Tuck"], 6’4 SG Immaculata

The Spartans made the Somerset County Tournament semifinals, but they have to replace Dominican commit [player_tooltip player_id="850365" first="Jaden" last="Honis"]. Tuck is a talented shooting guard who is ready for a bigger role on offense. The 6’4 wing is at his best attacking the basket and has a nice release on his jumper. Tuck is one of the top guard shot-blockers in the 2022 class and is an underrated passer. Immaculata is looking to win 20 games for its third consecutive season and Tuck has the talent to do so.

Other Players to Watch:

[player_tooltip player_id="900305" first="Philip" last="Urban"], 6’6 SF Pennington

[player_tooltip player_id="901967" first="Jonathon" last="Wyatt"], 6’3 SG St. Thomas Aquinas

[player_tooltip player_id="1013050" first="Andrew" last="Ball"], 6’6 SG/SF Shawnee

[player_tooltip player_id="1013061" first="Brian" last="Whitney"], 6’3 SG Passiac Valley
