The High Academic Files (Part 2)

Earlier in the week we talked about some of Florida’s top-notch student athletes, with an emphasis on student. Today we continue with that theme taking a look at some more future doctors, engineers, and business leaders of America. In addition to being talented athletes these are some guys whose grades will make them eligible for a majority of colleges and universities around the country.

PF [player_tooltip player_id="818722" first="Aaron" last="Jones"] (2021) 6-7 205 Evangelical Christian (Fort Myers)

GPA: 3.7 Desired Major: Business/Finance

Sinking 24 3-pointers at 36 percent, [player_tooltip player_id="818722" first="Aaron" last="Jones"] can stretch the floor for a big man. Aaron does a good job of keeping the ball high, and scores frequently going over his left shoulder. Leading Evangelical Christian in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (7.9) Jones established himself as one of the best big men in southwest Florida. As he continues to work on his foot speed, as well as expanding his offensive game, his already long list of suitors will continue to expand.

PG/SG Sean Johnson Jr. (2021) 6-2 175 The First Academy (Orlando)

GPA: 3.94 Desired Major: Sports Medicine

Starting on the gridiron as a quarterback for TFA, Johnson brings some of that football toughness onto the hardwood. A fluid athlete with long arms, Sean was an excellent defender, and rebounder leading the team in rebounds (5.9) and second in steals (2.3). On offense, Sean lived in the paint either slashing to the basket often using spin moves, or kicking it out to open shooters. With nightly averages of 10.1 points and 3.6 assists per game, Sean looks to prove that he can shoot the three at a higher percentage as a senior. And if he does, watch out!

SG [player_tooltip player_id="818914" first="Yell" last="Newhall"] 6-1 175 (2021) The Community School of Naples

GPA 4.1 SAT: 1510 Desired Major: Computer Science/ Medicine

Some young basketball players fail to understand their role on the court. For every successful basketball team, there is a guy who you may not see his name in the headlines, but is just as important to winning as anyone else. For the Community School of Naples, [player_tooltip player_id="818914" first="Yell" last="Newhall"] was that player. A tennis standout that recently fell in love with the game, Newhall willed his way into the starting lineup for the state semifinalist Hawks. Always picking his spots, Yell had some huge games bombing away from 3 for CSN scoring 24, and 21 points against Calvary Christian, and Neumann High School. On the season Yell only turned the ball over 9 times. Defense, and developing a midrange game are areas that he has continued to work on this summer

PG/SG [player_tooltip player_id="953723" first="Tyrone" last="Smith"] (2021) 5-8 150 Bartow

GPA: 3.8 Desired Major: Accounting/Finance

With major Division I prospect [player_tooltip player_id="818651" first="Walter" last="Clayton"] playing point, Smith was used at the shooting guard this past season, a role in which he thrived. With extreme quickness, Bartow’s in your face defensive style matched his strengths perfectly. On offense, Smith has a solid jump shot with a quick release, this past season he was the third leading scorer with 8.7 points per game for the 30-1 state champions. With improved shot selection, Smith should be a guard college coaches should track.

PF/C Nnamdi Edeoga (2021) 6-7 225 Charlotte (Punta Gorda)

GPA: 4.7 Class Rank: 3/472 Desired Major: Biology

Playing on a senior laden team with major Division I prospect [player_tooltip player_id="818646" first="Tre" last="Carroll"], Nnamdi showed flashes of potential as a rim protector coming off the bench. With a sturdy build, Nnambdi ran the floor hard, bodied up in the post often blocking shots. With a hard summer of work, and more opportunity next season, coaches looking for a big man with upside should take notice.
