While the camp included many top players, several under the radar guys opened eyes on the day. In this article we take a look at the top sleepers from day 1.
Malachi Murrell 6’2 La Quinta 6’2 SF 2022 – I identify him as a small forward, but Murrell really doesn’t have a position. What he does, is do everything with energy and athleticism. Murrell displayed a knack for scoring despite not having the ball in his hands often. He used his quick 1st and 2nd jump to grab several out of area rebounds, block shot and create impact plays.
Shamar Moore Shamar Moore 6'4" | SG Peoria | 2022 State AZ 6’2 PG Peoria 2022 (#91PHA 2022) – Moore is a good athlete with a physical frame. More of a combo than a point, willing defender with good length and strength.
Billy Barnes 6’3 TMG Prep Ca 2020 – Barnes is a very good player. He won’t wow you with any one skill, but knows how to play the game. He did all the little things on Saturday. He made the right pass, caught and finish and took and made open shots when they were available.
Brock Susko 6’3 SF Los Altos 2021 – Susko played with relentless energy all day. High effort guy who actually took a charge on the day. Made open shots and used his athleticism to finish well in transition.
Damian Ruiz 6’2 SG Murrieta Valley 2022 (#74PHSC 2022) – Ruiz was one of the top shooters on the day. It should come as no surprise for a player that hit 11 3’s in 40 point effort this season against Orange Glen. Good shooter with a quick release that stays shot ready.
Orlando Gonzales Orlando Gonzales 6'0" | PG Leading Edge Academy | 2022 State AZ 5’11 PG St Mary’s 2022 (#48PHA 2022) – Gonzales proved that he could get by anybody. He looked more like a combo on the day, but that was mostly because he got buckets. He showed terrific blow by ability, and was one of the most consistent paint touch getters on the day.
Daryian Matthews Daryian Matthews 6'5" | PF Dysart | 2021 State AZ 6’4 PF Dysart 2021 (#102PHA 2021) (featured image) – Honestly Matthews probably should be staring on the gridiron, however there’s a place for him on the hardwood if he wants it. Strong hands combined with the ability to go get the ball off the glass made Matthews one of the best pure rebounders on the day.
