When evaluating freshman basketball players, potential is one of the most dangerous words that can be used. It’s easy to imagine that every young player will turn into a D1 prospect, and while that’s optimistic the reality is, in every class someone comes from relative obscurity, to make a name for themselves. In this article we take a look at some of the sleepers in the class of 2023.

[player_tooltip player_id="988534" first="Leyton" last="Barr"] 5’10 PG Faith Lutheran (#37) - I’ll give credit to Barr he is relentless in his determination to get discovered. He contacted me and sent me some me some film. Luckily for him, I had already watched him play this season, and was happy to put a name to a face. Barr played well for Faith Lutheran’s JV last season. He shot the ball well, and showed enough wiggle to create space and get his shot off.

[player_tooltip player_id="987788" first="John" last="Pembleton"] 5’9 SG Clark (#33) - There is a new staff in place at Clark, and I’m excited to get into the gym and watch more of their talented players. Pembleton is an exciting young guard capable of knocking down 3’s off catch and shoot, and getting to the basket off the bounce. He is an intriguing playmaker that is the true definition of a sleeper.

[player_tooltip player_id="985642" first="Jaylen" last="Smith"] 6’3 PF Durango (#30) - I’ve watched a ton of Smith over the last few months. I’m just waiting for his frame to catch up with his skill. He is a wide bodied post, willing to compete for rebounds and play low post defense. He will have to improve his upper body strength and athleticism, but if he does.... watch out.

[player_tooltip player_id="985624" first="Ephram" last="Ezidiegwu"] 6’5 PF Bonanza (#24) - First of all, I love his dedication in the classroom. Secondly, unlike Smith, Ezidiegwu already posses a college level frame. He will have to improve his offensive game, however he is a good rebounder and willing rim runner. Bonanza does a terrific job of developing players so I will definitely be keeping an eye on him in the upcoming years.

[player_tooltip player_id="940473" first="Logan" last="Howren"] 6’4 SG Bishop Manogue (#12) - Howren probably shouldn’t be considered a sleeper, however I think people should get to know this R & J athlete from Reno. Understands defensive rotations even at a young age. Howren is a big time athlete that gets off the floor to clean the glass, and guards multiple positions.

[player_tooltip player_id="930659" first="Jake" last="Bevacqua"] 5’10 PG The Meadows School (#9) - Jake is another highly ranked player on this list. The main reason he is considered a sleeper is because he plays for a 2A school. During the summer, however don’t be surprised to see Bevaqua give buckets to several large school talents. He is a high IQ guy that shoots it well. He was injured most of the season, but go check out his numbers when he was on the floor.
