Monmouth County had an extremely successful 2019-20 with five teams playing in the sectional finals. Manasquan and Wall repeated as sectional champions, while Marlboro was seconds away from winning a sectional title. The county is filled with talented players ready to burst onto the scene in 2020-21. Here are the top breakout candidates from Monmouth County.

[player_tooltip player_id="901965" first="Charles" last="Anyichie"], 6’7 PF Ranney School 2022

With all the young talent on Ranney’s roster, there were a number of options to be considered in terms of breakout candidates. Junior [player_tooltip player_id="900354" first="Brian" last="Day"] played good basketball down the stretch for head coach Taj Holden, while [player_tooltip player_id="901964" first="Ryan" last="Zan"] emerged as an inside-outside threat. Anyichie had flashes of dominance inside and needs to show more consistency in his junior season. The athletic 6’7 forward is a good shot-blocker and is a force on the glass. [player_tooltip player_id="900298" first="Kyle" last="Rhoden"] may get the start over him inside, but Anyichie will be a big factor down low for the Panthers.

[player_tooltip player_id="929516" first="Connor" last="Walsh"], 6’5 SF Manasquan 2021

The Warriors had one of the best seasons in Shore Conference history as they repeated as Central Jersey Group 2 champions, won the Shore Conference Tournament title and finished with a record of 31-1. Shore Conference Player of the Year [player_tooltip player_id="901942" first="Ben" last="Roy"] returns to lead Manasquan, but [player_tooltip player_id="850360" first="Alex" last="Galvan"] and Kieren Flanagan both graduated. Sixth man Jack Collins seems like the logical choice, but Walsh’s ability to play at both ends gives him the edge. The lanky 6’5 wing is an underrated shot-blocker and good clutch performer as he hit big free throws against Holmdel. Manasquan will be one of the top teams in the Shore Conference behind Roy and Walsh’s play.

[player_tooltip player_id="900376" first="Mike" last="White"], 6’2 SG Christian Brothers Academy 2021

The Colts had an up and down 2019-20 season as they lost their first four games, but almost made the Non-Public A South semifinals. Junior [player_tooltip player_id="929483" first="Colin" last="Farrell"] led the team in scoring, but his classmate White has the potential to breakout in 2020-21. The 6’2 shooting guard is a tough prospect capable of hitting shots through contact. White has a good shooting stroke and can knock down three-pointers in bunches. The Colts have the potential to be one of the top teams in the Shore Conference in 2020-21 behind its backcourt of Farrell, White and [player_tooltip player_id="901946" first="Ryan" last="Mabrey"].

Jonathan Spatola, 5’6 PG Marlboro 2022

The Mustangs may have lost the Shore Conference’s top scorer in [player_tooltip player_id="896675" first="Alex" last="Ratner"], but they should be in good shape next season. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="931028" first="Jack" last="Seidler"] was named Third Team All-Shore and is ready for a leading role, while classmate Spatola will shoulder more of the scoring load. The diminutive point guard is one of the toughest players in the Shore as he is unafraid of attacking the basket. Spatola is hard to contain off the bounce and is a good passer. Marlboro should be tough to beat in 2020-21 with Seidler and Spatola running the show.

[player_tooltip player_id="931026" first="Cy" last="Arvantis"], 6’0 PG Red Bank Catholic 2022

The Caseys made a deep run in the Shore Conference Tournament as they lost to Toms River North in the semifinals. [player_tooltip player_id="896621" first="Charlie" last="Gordinier"] and [player_tooltip player_id="896654" first="Kevin" last="Bauman"] graduate, giving Arvantis more touches on offense. The 6’0 sophomore is one of the top shooters in the Shore Conference as he has a good stroke, a quick release and deep range. Arvantis is a good ball-handler and has a good chemistry with classmate [player_tooltip player_id="931027" first="Alex" last="Bauman"]. Red Bank Catholic will be a tough out in the Shore Conference behind Arvantis’ shooting.

Other Players to Watch:

[player_tooltip player_id="901983" first="DJ" last="Thomson"], 5’10 PG Keyport 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="901981" first="Colin" last="Ackerman"], 5’11 PG Wall 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="931025" first="Geoff" last="Schroeder"], 6’0 CG Rumson Fair-Haven 2022

Andreas Von Fricke, 6’6 SF Mater Dei 2021

Malik Fields, 6’4 PF Neptune 2022
