Continuing our series on the top players in the New Orleans Metro area who would have been working hard and playing this spring to impress evaluators and coaches. This article will focus on the Westbank, the other side…. of the river. The Westbank has a history of outstanding players from Euro league standout Lester “Bo” McCaleb to former Georgetown and NBA player Greg Monroe.
Here’s a look at the Westbank’s top players by school:
West Jefferson
Rashad May- 2022 6’0” PG May served well in his first year as a floor general for the Bucs. He attacks with his relentless downhill style helping to get to the free-throw line or creating easier opportunities for teammates. Like most young point guards May can improve in his management of the game and mid-range game.
Dequan Royal-2022 6’2” Wing Royal is a strong driving wing. He is strong-willed in his approach to getting the paint. His game will improve with reps shooting the ball once the shutdown is over.
Jeremiah Cook- 2021 5’10” SG Cook is a shooter who can shoot the long 3 pt. shot. When he’s on he’s capable to score in bunches, however, he needs to improve his conditioning to become more consistent. Improving his ball-handling and defense could help propel him high in the Metro rankings.
Cox
Alexzaye Johnson- 2022 6’1 PG Thrown in the fire his freshman year Johnson came back much improved his sophomore season. With that being said Johnson is probably the Metro area most improved player. He is strong, improved athleticism finishing plays above the rim, plus getting to his spot at will. Decent defender using his length and footwork to his advantage. One area to improve in would be to raise his ability to assert his will on the game.
Shaw
Isaiah Barnes 2022- 5’9″ PG An aggressive, high energy guard who is focused on scoring. Very scrappy on defense. Can improve his game with better shot selection and game management.
Isaiah Crawford-2021 6’3″ CG One of the most underrated players in the metro area. Plays out of position due to the lack of size on his team, but can score in a variety of ways driving, dunking or the 3 pointer. Has been held back because of injuries. Should be a breakout player.
Kameron Johnson-2023 5’5″ PG Don’t let his height fool you, Kameron is a giant on the court. He’s fearless between the lines, and runs his team efficiently. As a freshman he was not afraid of taking the big shot.
Higgins
Tyron Houston-2022 6’1’’ PG Strong athletic lead guard who does a good job of running a team. However, if he is to raise his stock he must improve his perimeter shooting.
Keymond McClure-2022 SG His team’s most consistent scoring threat Keymond did his best to keep them in games last season. He creative with the basketball how he scores and can score at all three levels. Must improve on the amount of turnovers.
Justin Nguyen-2022 CG Justin is a quick attacking guard with a very good first step. Outside shot is streaky right now. Can play defense when he wants to but more concerned with scoring. The next stage in his development will be balancing running a team and picking spots to score.
Landry-Walker
Jamond Vincent Jamond Vincent 6'2" | SG Landry-Walker | 2021 State LA – 2021 Athlete Jamond has been bullying and jumping over players for years. This last season he has been transitioning to the perimeter. Needs to improve on his feel and reads on the perimeter, with this improvement can take his game up a notch.
Bennie Amos Bennie Amos 6'0" | CG Landry-Walker | 2021 State LA – 2021 Pg. Bennie is a long-range bomber from outside sometimes out to 22 feet. Not a great athlete but savvy and intelligent with the basketball. Can improve in getting stronger and creating for others.
Karr
Shyves Johnson-2022 6’4” Wing– Johnson is Mr. Utility for his team, able to play inside out, rebound, and an extra ball handler. Still growing, Johnson must continue to work in the weight room to become stronger and tougher. If Johnson is to become a high-level player, he must increase his aggression.
