The first high school season is now over for the Class of 2023. Now seems like as good a time as any to break down the rankings and sort players out by skill. Let’s take a closer look at the rankings.

Best Scorer

Camden’s DJ Wagner wasted no time getting comfortable at the high school level. He is the next great scorer at Camden just like his father, Dajuan Wagner, was during his time in high school. Wagner is an elite scorer at all three levels. He can create his own shot and get in the lane and score at will. Wagner has a chance to be one of the top scorers in the state over the next three years.

Best Floor General

[player_tooltip player_id="850752" first="Simeon" last="Wilcher"] was inserted into Roselle Catholic’s starting lineup following an injury to [player_tooltip player_id="850351" first="Richie" last="Greaves"]. this proved to be a good move for the Lions because Wilcher emerged as a do it all point guard. He is an incredible athlete who tends to make good decisions on the floor. Roselle Catholic is guard heavy and Wilcher has the ball in his hands a lot. He is an elite passer and at 6’3, can score from anywhere on the floor.

Best Shooter

Wagner led the freshman class in three’s made with 71. He was one of the top shooters in the state. Wagner can shoot from anywhere on the floor and can create well. Other names who can create their own shots include University’s [player_tooltip player_id="850754" first="Spencer" last="Joyner"] and Saddle Day River’s [player_tooltip player_id="933044" first="Richard" last="Machado"].

Best Post Player

[player_tooltip player_id="902732" first="Mackenzie" last="Mgbako"] is one of the top ranked players in the Class of 2023. He comes from a program that builds post players at Gill St. Bernard’s and he is the next great one. At 6’7, Mgbako emerged as a dominant scorer and rebounder on both ends. He has a soft touch around the rim and can act as a rim protector on the defensive end. He will continue to perfect his game which is scary for opponents to think about.

Best Combo Guard

The Class of 2023 is very guard heavy at the top with Wagner, Wilcher, Joyner, and [player_tooltip player_id="850757" first="Cian" last="Medley"]. One name to keep an eye on is Machado from Saddle Day River. They were a strong program and will continue to be with Machado running the show. He is a guard that can play any of the top three positions on the floor. He is comfortable with the ball in his hands and can also give it up to play on the perimeter.
