Unfortunately, we only did five players for three teams, leaving plenty of guys who deserve the recognition out and even “snubbing” a few guys because of the limited space. Not to worry however, as we’ve come up with a list of honorable mentions (yes, we know there are some that got snubbed here too). Below, you’ll find five sophomore bigs that were heavily considered for the All State team.
Christian Carden | 6’5” F | Varina
Carden was a huge part of the surprising young Varina team that made it to the state tournament when many thought they were were too young and inexperienced. Carden got better and better as the year went on and was a very consistent scoring option who was a mismatch in their system as a four man. He can put it on the deck on the perimeter, he can create space and hit the midrange, he makes good decisions with he ball in his hands and he’s athletic and rebounds as well. He finished the year averaging 16.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game.
Keyontae Lewis Keyontae Lewis 6'7" | PF LC Bird | 2022 State VA | 6’7” PF | LC Bird
Lewis is one of many promising prospects for an LC Bird team that was one game away from making the state tournament with one junior and one senior in the rotation. Lewis is a force in the paint as he’s a big body that will bully guys in the paint but he also has good hands, good body control and good touch around the basket as well. He put up pretty good numbers throughout the year and he’ll be a guy that continues to improve and get better as he continues to get his body right and mature his game.
David Onanina David Onanina 6'6" | PF Bishop O'Connell | 2022 State VA | 6’7” PF | Bishop O’Connell
Onanina is one of the many young and talented players for O’Connell who got some much needed experience this year and will have a chance to be special moving forward the next few years in the WCAC. A physical and athletic big that gets it done on both ends of the floor, he’s a blue collar guy that doesn’t need plays run for him to be successful and his stats don’t always show the impact that he can make.
James Bell III | 6’7” PF | Goochland
Bell is a guy who doesn’t play for a big school in Goochland but he has plenty of upside and a good skill set for a young big his age. He’s long and lanky and should fill out with time, but at 6’7” he’s a good athlete who can score inside and out, gets up and down with the guards and causes mismatches all over the floor. He averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds for a very successful Goochland team, enough to earn him Second Team All District honors as a sophomore.
Judah Egbo Judah Egbo 6'7" | C Life Christian Academy | 2023 State VA | 6’7” PF | Jamestown
Egba has been an intriguing project since he first stepped on the court at Jamestown and as a sophomore he showed that he’s making strides in the right direction. He’s a good athlete who should become more fluid as he grows into his body, he plays with a good motor and toughness, he holds down the paint on both ends and competed with anyone who was thrown at him. He averaged 12.5 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks per game while shooting 49% from the field on the way to earning Second Team All Region honors.
