Top Opening Round Sectional Games

Every year in Sectional, some games are better than others. Some Sectionals are stronger than others, and the random draw results in some very unbalanced Sectionals across the state. Now, let's take a look at the top five games in each class across the state of Indiana.

4A

Hamilton Southeastern vs. Carmel (Sectional 8 at Noblesville) - Tuesday at 7:30

Hamilton Southeastern and Carmel played a couple of weeks ago, and it was a thriller down to the wire. Hamilton Southeastern was able to pull out the win, 62-61, thanks to a 15 point comeback. Round 2 is going to be a can't miss game that caps off a can't miss Tuesday night in Noblesville.

Indianapolis Cathedral vs. Indianapolis Crispus Attucks (Sectional 10 at Lawrence Central) - Wednesday at 6:00

In the first of two great games at Lawrence Central on Wednesday night, Crispus Attucks takes on Cathedral in a rematch of the double overtime-thriller in the championship game of the City Tournament. This game is going to be close all the way to start off a must-see Wednesday at Lawrence Central.

Lawrence North at Lawrence Central (Sectional 10 at Lawrence Central) - Wednesday at 7:30

This is the biggest game in every Sectional across the state as #1 Lawrence Central takes on #2 Lawrence North. North is 2-0 against Central this year including a win in the Marion County Tournament. The third matchup is set up for a top-level showdown between two of the top teams in the state.

Zionsville vs. Fishers (Sectional 8 at Noblesville) - Tuesday at 6:00

Fishers ran Zionsville out of their own building just two weeks ago, but the second matchup shouldn't be this lopsided. This game is going to be the undercard before the main event of Hamilton Southeastern and Carmel, but it should be a good one.

Avon vs. Brownsburg (Sectional 12 at Mooresville) - Tuesday at 6:00

Brownsburg beat Avon pretty soundly on their homecourt in December, but the two teams have been playing better since then. Brownsburg is not 22 points better than Avon, so if Avon can keep it close. This should be a great game to kick off the Mooresville Sectional tournament. The winner of this game has a clear road to the Sectional title.

3A

Mishawaka Marian vs. South Bend Washington (Sectional 19 at Jimtown) - Tuesday at 6:00

This is the first meeting between these teams this year, b.ut the Sectional draw did no favors for these two teams. Marian and Washington are two of the top three teams in this Sectional, and the winner of this game battles South Bend St. Joseph in the semifinals. This game will be a great way to open the Sectional.

Fort Wayne Leo vs. Fort Wayne Luers (Sectional 22 at Garrett) - Wednesday at 7:30

Luers and Leo did not play this season, but this is a matchup between two 15-win teams and the two Sectional favorites. The winner of this game will have the road to a Sectional championship laid out in front of them.

Guerin Catholic vs. Brebeuf Jesuit (Sectional 27 at Indianapolis Shortridge) - Tuesday at 7:30

The draw did not do these two teams favors as the top two teams in this Sectional meet in the first round. On top of that, the winner get Chatard, the third-best team in the Sectional.

John Glenn at Jimtown (Sectional 19 at Jimtown) - Tuesday at 7:30

Glenn and Jimtown battled out to a four-point win for Glenn earlier in the season, so round 2 should be just as good. With the Sectional draw placing the top three teams on the same side of the bracket, the winner of this game has a great chance to make a run to the title game.

Hamilton Heights at New Castle (Sectional 24 at New Castle) - Tuesday at 6:00

Hamilton Heights knocked off New Castle at Heights earlier this season, but this meeting will be on New Castle's home court. With New Castle's home crowd behind them, this game is going to be interesting, and the winner should be on their way to a meeting with the favorite, Delta, in the finals.

2A

Prairie Heights at Westview (Sectional 35 at Westview) - Tuesday at 6:00

Westview beat Prairie Heights earlier in the season in a close game, and they've got home court, so they've definitely got an advantage. They also have Charlie Yoder, the top uncommitted senior in the state of Indiana. This Sectional is going to be competitive throughout, and this game is just the beginning.

South Decatur vs. South Ripley (Sectional 44 at North Decatur) - Tuesday at 6:00

These two teams are the top two in the North Decatur Sectional, and it is a shame that they face off in the opening round. They played earlier in February, and South Decatur was able to pull out a one-point victory in overtime. This should be a great game to start off a very competitive Sectional tournament.

North Posey vs. Evansville Mater Dei (Sectional 48 at Southridge) - Tuesday at 6:00

This game opens a great Tuesday night at Southridge that features the top four teams in the Sectional. Mater Dei beat North Posey by 12 earlier this season, but look for Josiah Ricketts to have a great showing to give North Posey a chance.

Lapel vs. Wapahani (Sectional 40 at Alexandria-Monroe) - Wednesday at 6:00

Wapahani beat Lapel pretty soundly at the start of the season, but Lapel has been playing extremely well as of late. Look for these senior driven teams to give us a great first game on Wednesday night.

South Spencer vs. Forest Park (Sectional 48 at Southridge) - Tuesday at 7:30

South Spencer and Forest Park give us a rematch of an overtime showdown from earlier in the season. This game will cap off a great Tuesday night in 2A basketball.

1A

Covington vs. Lafayette Central Catholic (Sectional 54 at Attica) - Tuesday at 6:00

In the case of Sectional 54, the championship game is on Tuesday night. These two teams are by far the best in the Sectional, and they both have the potential to make a run as far as Semi-State or the State finals. The winner of this game will have an open road ahead of them, and they played each other close in the opening tournament of the season. This game will be one of the must-see games from the 1A postseason.

Barr-Reeve vs. North Daviess (Sectional 63 at Loogootee) - Tuesday at 7:30

Barr-Reeve will have to prove themselves in the Sectional tournament as they will have to beat the next three best teams in the Sectional. They start with North Daviess, and this will be their first test of the season. Look for the Loogootee Sectional to feature some of the top games across Indiana Sectional tournaments.

Victory College Prep vs. Indianapolis Tindley (Sectional 59 at Indianapolis Lutheran) - Tuesday at 6:00

Indianapolis Tindley beat Victory Prep in the Conference Tournament, but Victory Prep beat them later in the season during their regular-season meeting. The third meeting is going to be very competitive, and it comes at the most competitive time of the season.

Jac-Cen-Del at Southwestern-Shelbyville (Sectional 60 at Southwestern-Shelbyville) - Wednesday at 6:00

Jac-Cen-Del beat Southwestern at Southwestern earlier this year, so they're going to look to do the same on Wednesday night. This will be a very competitive Sectional, and this game is just the start to Sectional 60.

Central Christian at Indianapolis Lutheran (Sectional 59 at Indianapolis Lutheran) - Wednesday at 7:30

Indianapolis Lutheran is hosting the Sectional, and they are looking to take advantage of that in their opening round game against Central Christian. Central Christian beat them earlier in the season, and Lutheran is unbeaten against Sectional opponents, but this game should be competitive until the very end.
